A life of violence is traced from the Zoot Suit riots of the 1940s to the bloody streets of the 1990s. Three homeboys, Santana, Mundo and JD, born in a crucible of poverty, create the capitalist dream in their own way as powerful gang members. Jailed in their youth, they control the streets from the cellblock. After his release, Santana wavers between his old lifestyle and a fresh beginning with a new love. The question is, are those old habits too deeply rooted for him to escape from? And does he really want to give it all up...

This is a good movie. This has plenty of prison violence. Portrays the mexican mafia prison gangs in a realistic way. This film is better then its followup "blood in blood out" in everyway. If you like prison gangster films then definitely watch this movie. Trust me you wont be disappointed.

don't bother wasting your time with pretty boy jail film's/programs like prisonbreak.
watch this and see just how harsh and evil the yank prison system really is,from the start to the end this film will shock you ,edward james olmos plays a blinder as the lead the character, aswell as directing if only he had done the remake of battlestar galatica half as good as this.
this film is even better than the shawshank redemption ,trust me you won't be dissapointed
