That wild and crazy guy, Steve Martin, makes his acting debut in this wild and crazy comedy hit The Jerk. Steve portrays Navin Johnson, adopted son of a poor black sharecropper family, whose crazy inventions lead him from rags to riches and right back to rags. Along the way, he's smitten with a lady motorcycle racer, survives a series of screwball attacks by a deranged killer, becomes a millionaire by inventing the "opti-grab" handle for eyeglasses - and shows why he's the hottest comic performer in America today.

Top 100 Books Reviewer

This is the film that put Steve Martin on the map of Comedy. Steve plays Navin Johnson, an adopted son of a poor black family. On his birthday he decides that he needs to see the world and get out to find out what his "special purpose" is, I won't give anything away but he certainly does! On his travels, he comes across a lady motorcycle circus rider, I use the term lady loosely!! Dodges his way from a nutcase with a shotgun, attracts a scruffy dog and meets the love of his life. A simple act of helpfulness makes him a millionaire by his chance invention of the "opti-grab" handle for glasses, right through to him losing it all in a bizarre twist of fate. So many classic one liners, and gags galore, you will laugh your way right through this film, so make sure you don't leave the room!

a great movie with a young Steve Martin

This is a movie which really started Steve Martin's career, it is a funny movie and I absolutely roared with laughter where he asks his lady to marry him and jump in the bath with him, unfortunately his woman doesn't jump in, his DOG does!! And what makes it more funny is what his dog's name is, I won't say because I don't want to spoil it. This is a very good film and highly recommended.

 Nothing too heavy.

This film is not meant to be taken seriously. Steve Martin often plays the part of a cringe-worthy simpleton, adopted by a loving black family.
He suspects he doesn't fit in but doesn't know why. He has brief periods of 'smarts' that show through, leading him to fame and fortune and his ultimate fall from grace. The acting generally leaves much to be desired, but it's a light hearted comedy with pretty sweet morals.
