'THE DAY OF THE JACKAL' is a taut and colourful suspense thriller about the attempt by the right wing OAS to assassinate General de Gaulle. Edward Fox portrays the ruthless anonymous assassin hired by exiled OAS chief Colonel Rodin (Eric Porter) to carry out the execution.
Working under the code name 'Jackal', he is the best man in his field, uninvolved, without passion, and willing to murder for pure gain. The cold precision of his preparations are juxtaposed with the plodding efforts of the French authorities to uncover the plot.
Cyril Cusack is superb as the corrupt gunsmith and Delphine Seyrig a victim of the Jackal's attentions, is outstanding.

Zinnemann directs with as much calculated assurance as his subject. Fox is the Jackal, an upper-class English assassin hired to kill General DeGaulle in France. We know nothing of his background or ideology-he may not even be upper-class. We can only assume and guess about his character from the way he diligently goes about his task; a cold, ruthless professional.
Zinnemann's movie follows procedure; the Jackal's attention to detail juxtaposed with the French authorities painstaking investigation to stop him. The film unfolds at a very deliberate pace, the tension ratcheted up without the audience being aware they are approaching the excellent climax.

Day of the Jackal is considered one of Frederick Forsyth's best novels and is undoubtedly the best one on film.
The plot moves steadily and methodically towards the Jackal's objective. Despite the steady pace, the film is thrilling and exciting and, unlike many modern thrillers, the plot is both comprehensible and believable.
All of the characters come across as real people and the acting is low key yet superb.
Don't miss it.
Cold, calculating performance from Edward Fox who meticously plans to assassinate General De Gaulle. You are included in the ingeniuos planning whilst watching the authorities chasing their tails and you guiltily find yourself rooting for the bad guys. Although set in the late 60s the subject of terrorism is as relevant today. A real classic.
