Gregory Peck won an Oscar for his brilliant performance as the Southern lawyer who defends a black man accused of rape in this film version of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel. The setting is a dusty Southern town during the Depression. A white woman accuses a black man of rape. Though he is obviously innocent, the outcome of his trial is such a foregone conclusion that no lawyer will step forward to defend him - except Peck, the town's most distinguished citizen. His compassionate defense costs him many friendships but earns him the respect and admiration of his two motherless children.

 A must-see classic

I read the book for my english GCSE's a few years back and loved it, it has such genuine loveable characters and a great thought provoking story line. The film follows the book well, with great acting all round and some very moving scenes.

I totally agree with chawingawong. I read this book too in 1972 for my GCSEs and have read it every year since. This is the only film I have seen that actually reflects the spirit of the book. Both my children also enjoy both the film and the book.

One of the best films in history. And also one of the most brilliant, poignant scores... this movie truly touches something inside you.
