I love Kevin Smith films and I love Seth Rogens work so when I heard the 2 had hooked up for a flick I was almost overcome with joy! It makes sense really, their styles mesh well and they're both able to do hardcore funny films with a twist. I went to see this the day it came out (got off work early especially) and I loved it, it's everything you have come to expect from both men.
The highly inprobable but hilarious story is that of Zack and Miri, 2 20-somethings who live together and are so financially strapped that all their power and water is shut off in their apartment. After reluctantly accompanying Miri to a high school reunion Zack meets Brandon, the gay lover of one of his former classmates and a gay porn star at that. While brainstorming ways to make money Zack has the idea to make a porno (his reasoning for including Paris Hilton is classic Rogen!) and after some cajoling Miri is on board and te question becomes can these lifelong friends have sex on camera and not have it affect their friendship. They hire a ragtag band of stars and crew members all on the bankroll of Zacks co-worker at the bean-and-gone coffee store. When it comes to Zack and Miri's scene they have an intense but short sex scene where they both begin torealise their feelings go deeper than friendship. But with their financial safety on the line as well as their feelings will they tell each other how they feel?
This is probably the filthiest romcom you will ever see considering that the final proclimation of love is done at the same time as another questionable act. But as usual Kevin Smith is somehow able to turn a really filthy movie premise inot quite a sweet little romance tale. There's some awesome sitegags, usual Smith like dialogue accompanied with improv from cast that is very Apatow-esque all tailed off into a lovely story of 2 best friends becoming more than.
Seth Rogen leads the bunch and is on top form as you can tell he relishes the story. Elizabeth Banks brings her understated charm and wit and proves why she should be up there with the Cameron Diazs of this world. A back up cast that includes Jason Mewes as a slightly dim but loving porn actor, Katie Morgan who comes (no pun intended) straight from the porn world and proves she can hang. Traci Lords plays Bubbles another actress with an unusual talent, The US Office's Craig Robertson also co-stars, another Smith regular returns in Jeff Anderson (for once not playing Randal) and Justin Long cameos as the wonderful Brandon St. Randy in a show stealing role.
The extras on the DVD are OK but not as good as they usually are with Kevin Smith films... Surprisingly no commentaries but what we do have are a couple of skits, interviews with Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks talking about their experiences with porn and a 75 minute documentary on the making of Z&M with interviews with Smith, Rogen, Banks, Morgan, Mewes, Anderson and everyone else.
This film rocks and is funny... Lets just say if you loved 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, Mallrats, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back or the Clerks films you will love this film!
As usual if your a Kevin Smith fan then you will not be let down. This is a hilarious comedy that is full of good jokes and funny performances from some great actors including as usual the really funny Jason mewes and Seth Rogen. I'm not sure why people hate this movie so much, it has allot to offer in the way of laughs I suggest you check it out especially at this price.
I laughed my arse off in the cinema when i first watched this and can't wait for it to come out on DVD. Seth Rogen in this film is a comedy guru and Elizabeth Banks is sex on legs with added quirkiness. To put it bluntly if you liked 'KnockedUp' and 'Superbad' your gonna love this !!!
The problem is with comparing Smith to Apatow is that Apatow is trying to make now the films Smith was making around a decade ago. Rogen was about 13 when Clerks came (look it up on imdb!) and if it wasn't for Smith, Rogen (and Apatow for that matter) probably wouldn't have the career direction he has now. In terms of this film alone, Z&M is a great addition to the Kevin Smith CV. People said it had a schmaltzy ending, but to retort to that, have they seen any other Smith film? Every one of them has a happy ending, Mallrats, they get married on Jaws, Clerks 2, they finally declare their love, get married, have kids and re-open the QuickStop etc. etc. Thats the way Smith works, he grew up watching Landis and Hughes, thats what he knows!!
It had none of the charm of a kevin smith movie, no heart no soul, might as well have been a judd apatow flick
