Dragged from the pages kicking and screaming, from his own graphic Novel, Frank Miller directs for the first time, and judging by this could be the last!
This film looked so good, it looked like it was going to another bout of nasty noir, as with Miller's other adaption Sin City. But sadly the only thing is common The Spirit has with it's far superior Sin City is the visual style. None of the complex multistranded story, dark comic moments and blood splattered violence are seen. The cast are totaly waisted, and even Samuel.L. Jackson does little to liven up this mess. With screen beauty's like Eva Mendez and Scarlett Johansson given little to do aprt from walk around in figure hugging clothes (not a bad thing) and pout!. The tone of the film is just so even, ranging from one moment be a dark brooding noir then only to be shaken off balance by a bout of zany comedy.
In the cinema screening I went to people even walked out, but to be honest I did not think it was as bad as to walk out on, it's just a very frustrating film, as there is stil much to enjoy, but it's a matter of sitting through all the tedium to find it.
It not a terrible film, but very, very tedius and frustrating and disappointing.
Rent this film before you buy, with low expectation and you might be quite surprised. Or save your money and go see the superb Watchmen!
Try before you buy!

Loving sin city and 300 i has high hope for this movie but after watching first 5 min i thought ok what on earth is going on , this looks bad so i decided it must get better but i was wrong , you ever see those old batman movies (adam west) it was like that with all the cheesy lines and bad bad humour , one bit was funny in it but it was out played , the fight scenes are so unrealistic and just stupid and half the time you just thinking what on earth is going on here , the story line was like something a child wrote , the ending was the worse in a movie in a long time , and samuel l jacksons henchmen we funny at start then just got old , they tried to be to funny with this movie but it failed badly , i wish it was sin city 2 out and not this . Don't watch this im saying this as a frank miller fan

 Underrated!

I have had this movie for ages and never got round to watching it. I was not expecting much, something to pass the time perhaps... How wrong was I?

I absolutely loved it. The dialogue is witty and well constructed. I found myself laughing (tittering) nearly every other minute. Based on the reviews I am seeing for this, people were either expecting Sin City, or maybe Batman...Dont... this is a humorous adaptation of a 1940's character and series that has survived the test of time.
To see reviews stating "the acting was awful" is somewhat disturbing. Have you seen the acting list? (Samuel L Jackson, Jamie King, Eva Mendes, Scarlet Johansson etc.) Samuel L was a great bad guy and I loved the host of ridiculous clones played by Louis Lombardi.

The CG is low key and well blended to add to the story without being the focus.

I must admit that I never read the comics, but as a stand alone comic book adaptation, it was allot of fun watch.

So any one who likes their comic books or is up for some low brow humour, this is a yes yes yes!

 Sin city for tweens

This film has had the worst marketing campaign i think ever because they mis sold this film as another sin city when it is far from Sin city.

I love comic book movies and really wanted to see this film but my mouth was at the bottom of the cinema when it finished cos it was so different it was like a live action saturday morning cartoon come to life and while thats not a bd thing it was just a shock to see it like that. I love Gabriel Macht as the spirit he brought a sense of reality and weight to the role and he looked kick ass in the suit. Sam Jackson kicks ass like always and the tottie was hot and were all really strong characters which was nice to see.

Overall really enjoyable film but dont go in expecting sin city 2 or the dasrk knight then you'll find yourself enjoying this little gem
