For Bobby Darin (Kevin Spacey), performing was his life. It kept his heart beating. He came alive onstage, even when he was near collapse offstage. In 'Beyond The Sea', Bobby tells his own story.
At age seven, Bobby gets rheumatic fever that damages his heart forever. The doctor tells his mother Polly (Brenda Blethyn) he'll be lucky to live to the age of fifteen. Polly and Bobby's older sister Nina (Caroline Aaron) take care of him, along with Nina's husband Charlie (Bob Hoskins). Modern medicine and determination keep him alive, his heart's still ticking, and by 20, with the help of his best friend turned manager Steve Blauner (John Goodman) and musical director Dick Behrke (Peter Cincotti) he's working his way up, from tacky clubs to performing in Vegas, finally scoring a hit with 'Splish Splash'. But Bobby wants more. As he tells Life Magazine, he wants to be a legend by 25. 'Mack The Knife' makes him the star he's dreamed of becoming but for him this is only the beginning...

i was prepared to watch this movie because i didnt know
much about the singer, only the film title song, and because kevin spacey not only plays the title role, but is basically behind the making of the film. what i wasnt prepared for was just how much of a lavish, surprising, diamond of a film that it turned out to be. i was so taken back, i had to stop the film about halfway through to watch all over again. i didnt want it to end!!! basically, not just a run of the mill biopic, it is a unique, sensitive
labour of love from one of the most talented performers out there today. spacey simply creates magic onscreen, singing as well as darin, dancing as well as estaire (and
making it look cool too!) a tribute to a great singer, as
well as a bigonne era of cinema, simply magic. please dont let the plain trailer fool you. what a great movie!!!
