This version of 'The Big Red One' contains 40 minutes of extra footage that was removed prior to the original release.

Lee Marvin stars in this episodic retelling of the exploits of the American First Infantry Division during World War II, focusing on the squad's sergeant and four of the teenage soldiers. They struggle to survive campaigns from North Africa in November, 1942, to Czechoslovakia in May, 1945: along the way they participate in the invasion of Sicily, the D-Day invasion, free a lunatic asylum and a concentration camp.

Fuller had served with the Big Red One, the U.S. First Infantry Division, and the autobiographical content of his film kept it close to his heart. This full-length version, which is close to the late director's original cut, is one of American cinema's great war movies. Working with 70,000 feet of vault materials and Fuller's shooting script, critic/filmmaker Richard Schickel heads a reconstruction that adds over 40 minutes and transforms a truncated but admired war film into an epic masterwork!

I had this film on vhs and wanted to replace it on dvd.It says on the back extra footage and remastered in 5.1,you will notice the difference. So many remastered older films sound just the same as the original. This film is the pre-runner to private ryan and also a couple of others as it covers several stories.Considering it was made in 1980 it is still as good as some of todays.I would have given it a 5 only some people will compare it to the more modern films that can use computer graphics. For all war film buffs, definitely one to add to your collection.

Reconstructed with 40 minutes of extra vital footage this was made in 1980 by Samuel Fuller and is a fantastic addition to my war collection as it is explosive!!
It is Based on the true story of Sam Fuller who served with the Big Red One back in World War 2 and for just under three hours you are gripped as you follow these soldiers on there campaign through Africa to D-Day and more!!
Packed with action and drama, a great cast including Lee Marvin, Robert Carradine and Mark Hamill, Big Red One is amongst some of the best war films ever made and is a must in any war collection and at just £3.99 it is a bargain!

 Brilliant!

I bought this film having seen excerpts on Channel 4's '100 Best War Films' and interviews with the cast: I'd never watched it; never heard of it.
Possibly distribution problems in 1979/1980 were the cause. During the 'feature' extras it's explained that the original studio Lorimar went bust then a further two studios took it on. The finished product was possibly not good.
This edition is. Bits of footage have been found in the archive's at the three studios and skilifully edited in what I consider is a masterpiece.
A thrilling account of 4 'survivors' of the campaigns in North Africa; Sicilly; Battle of the Bulge...
Buy it!
You won't regret having this film in your collection.

For me I love these type of films. I found this to be brillaint!!

This is the restored version of Director Sam Fullers WW2 epic , the original was deemed too violent by the studio (Oh noes a violent war film!!). Original material has been added by a restoration team and now this is a film with the resolute stamp of empirical authority.
The main characters are all part of the 1st Infantry , the Big Red One of the films title , named after their insignia. Ex Marine Lee Marvin in his last great role plays the gruff Sergeant along with Privates Griff , Zab Vinci and Johnson. Griff is played by Mark Hamill at the peak of his Star Wars fame. We follow them from North Africa to Sicily onto Omaha Beach and through Europe until they liberate a Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia. The film is a series of intense battle sequences , interspersed by periods of quiet reflection , jokey banter and the cold dread of death.
There is grim humour in the script , but also poetry and understated emotion.

This war film is no dirty dozen but it is good at times. The plot is very good but some of the actors chosen really stink(mark hamill and kelly ward). However marvin is pretty good as is robert carradine of revenge of the nerds fame. Only for war fans
