Based on the graphic novel written by Alan Moore, Watchmen is a complex, multi-layered, mystery adventure which is directed by 300'sZack Snyder and stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Carla Gugino, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode and Patrick Wilson.

Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the 'Doomsday Clock' - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight.

When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...But who is watching the Watchmen?

 UNFILMABLE PERFECTION!

Alan Moore's classic graphic novel was once said to be unfilmable.
The project has been in production hell for years with many director's attatched to the project, only to be intimidated by it's mature and violent context. That was until Zack Snyder stepped up to the challenge. After bringing the dead back to gloriouse life in the 2004's classy remake of Dawn Of The Dead, and ripping the pages out of Frank Miller's Spartan battles in the stylish, but shallow 300. Snyder attempted the almost impossible. The thing about Watchmen that causes the problem with transfering from the pages to the screen is the multi-layed story, time spanning structure and the violence, the vision of an alternative world, where so called Super Hero's have no powers. Snyder approaches the film with an as close as possible structure, and this is why this film really does work. The film's vision is amazing, and although the film may not be as dense as the novel's origins, makes for gob smacking viewing. The film is as smart as it is exciting, with so many jaw dropping sequences to mention, and although the film is a styish cinematic marvel, never does it seem over flashy as with Snyder's earlier 300. The multi-character's are well written, and every body gives pitch perfect performances, capturing the the essence and dark comic undertones of the book. This film could have so easily turned into a kid friendly watered down comic book movie, that thank god it did not turn into the fluff of Fantastic Four.
This is a very violent film as heads explode, bullets shatter bones, and people get torched.
This is truly amazing adult entertainment, that has to be seen on the big screen, but somehow feels like a directors cut will be available on DVD.
This movie stands as the Best comic to Film adaption ever filmed along with The Dark Knight.
Go see it now and be amazed!

 Deliciously dark

As a fan of Alan Moore's graphic novels (not comics, far too intense to be called something as trivial and lightweight as a 'comic'), i was indeed glad for another of his best-sellers come to the big screen. I loved the deep and dark atmosphere to this, almost perfectly mirroring the novels. The action and costumes were great, with superb acting from relatively unknown actors. Wonderfully detailed and morbidly graphic. I look forward to watching those extras on the dvd.

 Fantastic effort

This film was born to fail in most peoples eyes. On the one hand you have the die hard fan boys who will never be pleased. Then you have the general public who are expecting 'another super hero movie'. Then there are those like me who enjoy comic books and take adaptations as they come. Fan boys will go wild at slight changes in the move from book to live screen and the general public will be bored by a super hero story that has some intelligence behind it. Yes it can be a little confusing at times and long winded but so was the graphic novel. This is as good as an adaptation as you could get for most audiences. If your looking for a 'kapow' hero film, watch spiderman. If you want a thought provoking story with a side helping of hero, watch this.

 "..Unique comic book classic.."

This has got to be one of the best comic book movies ever made, watchmen easily stands up to anything before it, it has an amazing and deep and interesting storyline unlike alot of comic films, great effects, interesting characters with good back stories. it was rather a brave thing to do giving this an 18 certification and having it run at just over two and a half hours, but it was needed and well worth all the effort, plus with all the cool features you get on this disc its a must own film and already a classic.
