If you believe in love at first sight, you'll never stop looking...

Writer Patrick Marber adapted the screenplay from his own scathing stageplay in which a chance meeting between Englishman Dan (Jude Law) and American visitor Alice blossoms into a troubled relationship, bringing together and then affecting a second couple involving Larry (Clive Owen) and Anna (Julia Roberts). Sex and love are explored, capturing all the vulnerability and brutality of people falling in and out of love...

At first I did not expect this film to be great, but then as soon as you start watching I changed my mind, this is a true masterpiece and is wonderfully written and great acting from all the cast, this film deals with subjects that are unique and this gives the movie unpredictability and as a viewer that becomes enjoyment

Overall great film!

 A TOTAL MUST SEE

this film has 4 of the most honest actors around at the moment. i held back from watching it, as i thought it wud be a typical love story that would be sickly sweet, but now after watching it you couldnt get a more accurate view of what relationships are generally like. No one turns out to be the good guy, as everyone is deceitful. by far one of my favourite controversial films

My favourite film - not just another rom com

see it! see it!! SEE IT!!!! It is just SO honest, more honest than Bridget Jones. Noone comes out as the goodie - that's what I love about it - there's no dreamy hero - they're all deceitful and pathetic. These characters are utterly believable. The film is incredibly moving, and, just like life, utterly unpredicatble. SEE IT!!!

Hard to Care About such Unlikable People

Based on an award winning play Closer tells the story of four lovers across a four year period. The movies theatre origins are apparent throughout with its small cast and succession of two person scenes. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, most scenes are certainly well written and performed admirably by the cast, it can make their story seem very isolated from the outside world on occasions.

Despite these excellent performances however the biggest problem I had with Closer is that, with the possible exception of Alice (Portman), it is very difficult to feel any sympathy for any of the characters and their predicaments. Throughout the film their behavior makes them continually come across as totally unlikable to the point that by the films conclusion the ongoing drama between them becomes closer to irritating than interesting.
