Determined to make a life for herself and her daughter, Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney), a young widow, moves into a cottage overlooking the windswept English coast. She soon learns that it's haunted by the ghost of its former owner, a salty sea captain (Rex Harrison). But the Captain's effort to scare off his new tenant soon develops into a most unlikely love affair.
When Lucy runs out of money, the Captain "ghost writes" a book for her based on his life story. What a lovely film, have watched it a number of times and always enjoy it. Nice to watch on a Sunday afternoon with a box of chocs. They don't seem to make nice films like this anymore
Despite the title this is not a chic flick. Its of its time but carefully crafted with brilliant performances. Its hard to decribe really, its brooding at times, frivolous at others but overall deeply moving but without being joyous or sad. IMHO one of the best love stories ever written and luckily its not been remade!
I absolutely love this film, despite it bein from 1947 & in black & white i still think its great. An all-round family film, that is a must on a rainy day
There is so much to enjoy and appreciate in this wonderful film. The cast is perfect. Gene Tierney, portraying a strong, independent woman, has excellent chemistry with the hardened salty seadog Rex Harrison. The presence of George Sanders in any film makes it a treat and he deserves to be known for so much more than the voice of Shere Khan in Disney's 'Jungle Book'.
This film is now over 60 years old and deserves to be respected not as an excellent old black and white film, but as an excellent film - forget the 'old' and 'black and white'. These factors have no bearing on the standard of any film. The Ghost and Mrs Muir has stood the test of time!
This is brilliant! Gene Tierney really does show her lovely self in this one. Get your hanky ready for the ending!!
