Firstly, I must say that I am an avid fan of Spongebob et al. However, this was only since having a baby and him being glued to the screen whenever a series episode came on TV (Toonatik - ITV) and he's only 6 months old! Then one day I sat with him and couldn't believe how funny, clever, entertaining etc it was to me - not just children, toddlers or even babies! It really has to rate as an all time great series right up there with Top Cat, Scooby and Tom & Jerry etc. Then one day in a supermarket my wife bought the movie knowing how good Spongebob was and we sat down prepared for something special. I really don't understand all the other reviews here but we both found the film quite boring, unfunny and the worst of it by far quite unsettling as it came across as dark and scary especially for some youngsters. I compare this movie to Itchy & Scratchy v. Tom & Jerry. Its hard to describe but although both programs show on the surface violence there is that unwholsome graphicness and mental darkness surrounding some scenes that simply should not be shown to a younger audience. As far as "unfunny" goes I believe the use of "celebrity" voices in the movie as opposed to the professional voices in the series make such a big difference with the timing, intonation and accents all awry. It left me amazed that at the end of it they gave a universal rating (as unfortunately it only covers the physical, not the mental aspects of a film/programme), and very worrying that so many people actually found it funny enough or whatever to give it a top rating here on Play.com! If you think hard about it, even if you don't agree with my comments per se, you have to at least agree that the film isn't a patch on the series? Thank you for reading this far.
