Cirque Du Freak:The Vampire's Assistant, based on the popular series of books by Darren Shan, is a fantasy-adventure about a teenager who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.

16-year-old Darren (Chris Massoglia) was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend, got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That's the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty.

Newly undead, he joins the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures from a snakeboy and a wolfman to a bearded lady (Salma Hayek) and a gigantic barker (Ken Watanabe). As Darren flexes his newfound powers in this dark world, he becomes a treasured pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts. And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their brewing war from devouring what's left of his humanity.

 Brilliant! =]

It is surreal to see John C. Reilly [Crepsley] playing a serious character, and he plays it marvellously, and so does the rest of the actors but i won't bore you for too long. As far as the 'Book to Film Accuracy' goes i can't really comment because I haven't read all of the books but i can say that it's not the best rendition because i think the books are much darker but don't let this put you off. This film is just a joy to watch even if you haven't read the books. It has everything: Action, Humour, Romance but i won't spoil it for you. I would recommend 'The Vampires Assistant' to anyone who is a fan of the books or is just a fan of awesome Vampire stories. =] Enjoy!

 Mostly disappointing

The movie was very different to the book in a bad way. I don't think the actors were suited to the roles. but a good film for the viewers who hasn't read the book. Some of the special effects were quite good ie the "flitting scenes" but not really worthy of a second viewing.

 Don't think of the books!

I am a big fan of all the Darren Shan books and I couldn't wait for this film to come out, it's been a long wait! On his website, Darren Shan specifically said DO NOT see it as an adaptation of the books, see it as if the books provided an inspiration for the film. I'm pretty bummed that it is so different but that can't be helped. As long as you don't think of the books whilst watching it, it is an alright film.

A really enjoyable film. My teanage son has read the books, but I was'nt expecting much as I'd never read them. Was very surprised how much I enjoyed it. Hope there are more film adaptations of the novels.
