Upon realising my great likeness towards Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter through watching many movies, I decided it was high time I sat down and watched this highly-rated film.
Making this decision was one of the best things I've ever done. This movie is just what I expected it to be and much, much more. There's music, gore, humor and even a hint of romance! This movie simply supplies us with everything that we expect in a good movie these days.
Spectacular acting from Johnny and Helena, (and other actors such as Alan Rickman) makes this movie even more exciting and intriguing to watch. Each actor/actress expresses a great amount of emotion throughout, making it a lot more interesting and not at all boring.
With the darkness and depth provided in this film, we, as an audience, are made to believe that not everything/everyone is what it/them appears to be, which by the end of the rollercoaster ride of a movie, proves to be true.
The music used in the film, which I assume was taken from the original 1979 stage show of the famous tale, is gripping, riveting and quite informative. I am positive that at least one or two of these great tunes will be glued into your mind and you will find yourself humming it in your sleep days after watching the movie!
With excitement, gore, music, laughter, and romance around every corner, you are sure to enjoy this movie without the slightest hint of disappointment!
Enjoy!

 A great gothic film

The first thing people need to know about Sweeney Todd is that it is based on a musical. DO NOT complain about this film and give it a low rating because you didn't realise - the Broadway musical first came out in 1979 and was a huge success. The music and lyrics, written by Stephen Sondheim, are brilliant.

Tim Burton did a fantastic job of adapting Sweeney Todd to a film - he trimmed a complex 3 hour musical to a 2 hour film, in which the story was still completely coherant. The casting is perfect, where all characters from the musical are played by great actors who end up absolutely owning their respective roles.

While Depp's singing voice is not perfect, he plays Sweeney with a fantastic dark and brooding manner. Helena Bonham Carter's singing is great, considering Mrs Lovett's is one of the hardest roles. Her acting is, as usual, spot on. Alan Rickman and Sasha Baron Cohen, both incredible singers, also steal all scenes they are in.

Burton has taken a great musical and made it in to an even better film, with a suitably dark tone, brilliant sets and, as I have said, a stellar cast. This is easily his best film since Nightmare Before Christmas, and one of the best movie musicals of all time.

 It's okay, nothing special

In a recent interview, Johnny Depp said he hated singing for this film and it just shows his commitment to Tim Burton.

The film itself, is okay, the blood and gore is a step up from Burton's usual dark self but that isn't a problem. I just didn't really gel with the film as much as I would of liked, maybe it was because of the singing.

 I LOVE THIS MOVIE

I was given this as a birthday present from a friend who had clearly forgotton all about it so had grabbed the first shrink wrapped DVD on his shelf (bless his heart) and I didn't really think it would be my kind of thing, but as it is I am so pleased he forgot!! I was surprised to find it was a musical, being a very dark story line, but I think it works brilliantly and is very cleverly made (although the blood isn't terribly realistic)
A definite must see!!

 Brilliant musical!

Usually musicals are for the family and are a bit corny. NOT THIS FILM! It is for adults (what with all the blood and murder) and the story is great, the songs are witty and it even has a dark twist at the end. Depp is also great in the roll of Todd.

 not for me

Fantastic adaptation of sondheim and Wheelers' musical!

Anyone already familiar with the musical will enjoy this compelling and beautifull screen adaptation. Tim Burton has excelled even on his already impressive back catalogue with his dark and gothic vision of victorian london. Many of the songs have been adapted to suit the film genre and are performed superbly by the cast. Depp is fab as always but it is Helena Bonham Carters' sympathetic portrayal of Mrs Lovett ,Todds accomplice in crime, that keeps the audience on side. A highly recommended dark, sinister and funny film and one that improves with each viewing.

 Quite good

i think it is a good film, at the start its a bit irritating with all the songs but then after a while you get into the flow of things however i do think that it would of been better had it not been a musical; also you enjoy it much more the second time of watching than the first.

 Bit Dull

Was expecting so much more from this movie....basically a romantic musical with splashes of blood.
Depp is brilliant as ever, proving again that he is one of the most accomplished actors of his generation and Carter is a more than worthy side kick but the singing really starts to grate on the nerves after a while and for all of the costumes and back drops to a grey and impovished London there really isnt a lot more going on..
The ending has a good twist but all in all a disappointing watch and a case of a gamble not really paying off.
