Visionary director Terry Gilliam is back with the sort of outlandish fantasy world that only he can create. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Oscar-winner Heath Ledger in what would tragically be his final role, this surrealist adventure stands as a fitting testament to a much-missed talent.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus tells the story of the titular Doctor and his travelling 'Imaginarium' where audience members get the chance to choose between light and joy, or darkness and gloom. Doctor parnassus long ago made a bet with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on the grounds that when his first born reached its 16th year, he or she would become the property of the devil. Dr Parnassus' daughter Valentina is now approaching her 16th birthday and he is desperate to protect her from the imminent handover. The devil arrives but, as a betting man, makes another wager. Now, in order to win Valentina, the victor must be the first to seduce five souls. Joined by many wild and eccentric characters in his journey, Dr Parnassus promises his daughter's hand in marriage to the man that helps him win.

This new Terry Gilliam flick will be notable for being the last film Heath Ledger worked on, his role in the film being unfinished before his untimely death. As the story is centered on a 1,000 year old magician with a magic mirror that serves as a portal, the film was saved by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell all playing versions of the same character portrayed by Ledger, changing as they pass through the mirror.

 Fantastic movie

I watched this movie 2 days ago and I thought that it as absolutely amazing. The storyline is very complicated, so you might have to read the plot before watching this film. It was really good to see Verne Troyer to have a serious role and Heath Ledger's performance is really great. The whole idea of Tony's transormation worked really well and this movie was written by Terry Gilliam so expect some Monty Python styled themes such as backgrounds. I would recommend you watch this film because it is really worth it and acting is really good.

Terry Gilliam delivers another visually inventive and wildy creative morality tale that has now been overshadowed more for being the last screen appearance of the late Heath Ledger.

As the Devil (Tom Waits) comes after the inveterate gambler Dr Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) for the 16 year old daughter (Lily Cole) he bartered away years before the old man is trying to figure out yet another way to outsmart his enemy.

Can the discovery of amnesiac Tony (Heath Ledger) provide him a way to save his daughter?

Great acting from all, including Verne Troyer in support and the inventiveness of the visuals make this a great fantasy but obviously all eyes are on Ledger. And if he makes less impavct than he did as The Joker, it's only because he role itself here is far less intense. Nonetheless, it's a fitting final performance that he has left us with. Filling his shoes, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell acquit themselves best - I wasn't that taken by Jude Law personally but that was the only complaint I had.

All in, a highly enjoyable film!!
