April 1945, a nation awaits its... Downfall

Not since G.W. Pabst's 1956 effort, 'Letste Akt' (The Last Act) has a German film attempted to tackle the subject of their most famous leader, Adolf Hitler. Breaking a long-standing taboo, the director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, has made a film that has sparked much debate in Germany and the rest of the world.

Downfall features an astonishing performance by Bruno Ganz as history's most notorious figure. Providing an unprecedented and controversial insider's perspective, the film is a gripping insight into the madness and desperation of Hitler in the final hours of the war as the Russian Army closes a ring around Berlin. Beautifully photographed and brilliantly acted, this tour de force is at once dramatic, harrowing and remarkably authentic.

The basis for the screenplay by writer-producer Bernd Eichinger came from two key sources: Joachim Fest's book "Inside Hitler's Bunker: The Last Days of The Third Reich", the recognition that the horrifying epic of Hitler and his people during his twelve years in power was reflected in those last twelve days in the bunker; and the memoirs of Hitler's private secretary, Traudl Junge, in Melissa Mueller's book, "Until The Final Hour: Hitler's Last Secretary", which provided an invaluable insight into the character of the man, and those final, fatal few days of the war.

I borrowed this film from my reg teacher after seing a small bit in class. It's so good that i had to buy a copy for myself. The film shows brilliantly what it would have been like for hitler at the end of the war. It makes you feel a range of emotions from compassion to sadness. Many people will automatically rule out this film because of subtitles, but i must encourage everybody to see this magnificent film. Although i am only 14 i felt that the film was amazing and the actors portrayed their characters so well.

All in all i would rate this a10 out of 10 must see film!!

Amazing German film! You must buy this!

I love foreign war films and have a decent collection of Korean, Chinese, French, German and Russian films.

I recently bought this German made war film "Downfall" (German language with subtitles). It's set in the amazingly tense final days of WWII in Europe from within Hitler's underground bunker in Berlin, as the Russians close from the East and the Allies from the West. See Hitler's mental decline and how his personal staff strive to handle the hopeless situation to the point of desperation as the Third Reich comes to an end.

An amazing film that deserves to be seen by everyone. Buy it and pass it on to your freinds. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Also see these amazing war films : "Brotherhood", "Saints & Soldiers", "Days of Glory", "Stalingrad", "Joint Security Area" and "The Star".

Not enough films have been made showing the war from a german point of view and not enough films have been made by those who where once the axis powers.

This film should serve as a reminder that not all germans where nazi's and that germans during world war 2 where just as human and as normal a person as our own grandfathers who fought in the conflict where.

A great film, Dont let the fact its subtitled put you off. Its shows just how mad a man hitler really was.

 A Must See Movie!!!!!!!!

This is an excellent film full stop. If you are a fan of world cinema then you will enjoy this gem without question.

Even if you are not a fan of world cinema you will enjoy it. Its visual entity and realism of what World War 2 must of been like makes this a must see movie and one of the best war films around. Mostly taking place in Hitler's bunker, sounds simply but nevertheless an excellent film! Ten out of ten.
