One of the best Vietnam films.

One of the 1st films to actually show Vietnam from a personal view. From US Marine recruit training to the Tet New Yr Offensive which suddenly showed that being a major global power wasnt all it was cracked up to be. Kubrick gives a surreal and gripping feel to a war film which goes from a war mongering US Marine Sargeant Major during training to a dying female Vietnamese sniper whos death is drawn out by a squad of Marines who cant decide who delivers the final grace. Its a film that makes you think about futility. A war waged on propaganda and a war fought by Americans who dont belong and dont believe in what they are doing. Superb soundtrack as well that delivers. Great film and a must for anybody that wants to see a film that doesnt favor a side. Its 2hrs of American gung ho US Marine attitude gone wrong and questioned. It works.

This is one of the rare war films that is better before you actually see any fighting. The first half of the film is about soldiers training to fight in vietnam, then the second half is the actual fighting.Look out for the crazy drill sergeant!

  Classic Movie

Another classic in stanley kubricks catalogue, the film just has to be watched, it certainley is not "just another war movie" the first hour at boot camp has some of the best acting, dialogue, drama and tension that i have ever seen. The casting of all the actors is perfect and when we get into the war side of things, it's the real deal. Can't believe the war sequences were shot in london.
Movie is more of an experience therfore it's hard to write a review. Defo one to watch.

I didnt like the way it seemed to be filmed in two parts but its still very good. The first part is cinema gold and very gripping.

  be warned about this version

this version (the Warner Bros war collection version) is presented in a 1:33 to 1 aspect ratio. Basically, that means the picture is square. Which won't look very good on your widescreen TV will it? I bought this version expecting a widescreen print (as it was originally filmed) and was disappointed.

Legendary war film full of iconic images about which little more can be said. This is another flick that will be remembered and watched fifty years from today, and really, it still is the best film about the Vietnam War.

  WAR IS HELL !

This is a film of two chapters .
The first chapter is the intense training at boot camp, with the brilliantly sadistic and very funny R.Lee. Ermy as the drill sargent.
The second chapter is the war in the concrete jungles of vietnam, it's very shocking and very real.
both chapters of the film compliment each other, but for me the boot camp chapter is the best, because of R.Lee. Ermy's drill sargent.
His abuse and cutting remarks are now a thing of legend.
the second chapter stands well because of the shocking sniper sequence.
This is one of the best vietnam war films ever made. Also for me the best film Stanley Kubrick ever made, as usualy his films are up there own arse with there self importance. None of that is present here, just raw anger.
A brilliant film, and a must buy !

  Essential War Film- Vietnam Exposed

| | See all NameizNaz's reviews (112)

This film is made memorable by the two distinct halves, with very different circumstances. My preferred first half involves a hilarious drill sargeant terrorizing his men into shape, and most notably , who (being overweight) is shown hell more than any other marine hopeful. The second part takes place in the actual war (following their graduation to the U.S. Marines), and is just as sickening and twisted as the first. Full Metal Jacket should be viewed, by not only War Film fans, but purely movie fans wanting to witness an excellent and powerful film.
