Life is a terrible thing to sleep through.

Meet Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp), a young man who lives in Endora, Iowa, population 1,091. Gilbert lives with his mother, whose 36 stone frame is slowly destroying the fragile Grape homestead, his brother Arnie, (Leonardo DiCaprio) who was never expected to survive childhood, and his two sisters. Gilbert's only excitement is his affair with Mrs. Betty Carver (Mary Steenburgen). Besides that, Gilbert's life is weird. And he doesn't seem to enjoy it. But one day a mysterious, beautiful girl named Becky (Juliette Lewis) moves into town with her grandmother, and Gilbert's world begins to change...

I absolutely love this film! I only really bought it because I am a fan of both DiCaprio and Depp, not really knowing what it was actually about.

I had never heard of it before, but it is a right little gem! It's brilliant, watch it.

This is a refreshingly different film from the USA which has more of a European feel to it. One can easily imagine it translated to, say, Sweden with the same plot where it would work as well - not surprising as the director is Swedish. Johnny Depp gives a sensitive performance as Gilbert and his concern for, and tolerance of, his mentally handicapped brother Arnie is very touching. As the brother, Leonardo di Caprio (he was 18 at the time) delivers a performance of astonishing maturity - he is completely and utterly convincing, lovable and infuriating at the same time. Comments I have read elsewhere by people who have worked with people like Arnie say it is a completely accurate portrayal. A gem of a movie to which I will return often.

 Not disappointing

Brilliant film, with a very young Leo Dicapro playing an autistic child. Very well acted and great story line

I thought this was an ok film, Leonardo Dicaprio was brilliant in this film and his performance made the film but i felt the storyline was a bit slow and no real point to where it was heading
