Bold, powerful and starkly realistic, this chilling cinematic debut of horror master Wes Craven (Scream) is a shocking journey into the heart of evil. Written and directed with "almost unbearable dramatic tension" (Chicago Sun Times), The Last House on the Left will make you deadbolt your doors and frantically mutter: "It's only a movie... it's only a movie... it's only a movie.!"

Easy going Mari Collingwood and her fun loving friend Phyllis are on their way to a Bloodlust concert to celebrate Mari's 17th birthday when three escaped convicts kidnap and torture them. But Mari and Phyllis are fighters, and although they are drugged and beaten into unconsciousness, stuffed in a car trunk and driven into the woods for even more brutality, they are still alive.... But for how long?

Top 100 DVD Reviewer

Well this has been a long time coming, maybe there will be an uncut version of 'I spit on your grave' on the way too. This was last released by Anchor bay here in the UK, this seems to have most if not all the AB extras with the inclusion of the excellent horror come slasher documentary 'Going to pieces' which in itself is worth the asking price. If you are a horror fan you must add this to your collection.Great sleeve art which looks close to the original film poster. Violent and nasty this helped set the standard in true horror entertainment. If you are used to PG13 horrors than avoid this at all costs. This will also include the uncut version of Kruge and company which includes various scene changes and story line not shown in LHOTL.This release must make horror fans in the USA jealous as we in the UK get more in the way of extras - not fair really as this was made in America - ha ha.All in all a great package and sure to become a collectors item.Overall well worth your hard earned cash.

A down and dirty horror - it's aged, but is still invaluable

As with most horror classics (think The Exorcist, Texas Chain Saw, Halloween), Last House does not benefit from being a film of its time. While I respect the opinion of the below reviewers, its worth remembering that when this came out, there was simply and literally NOTHING like this.

There had never been a film which so closely depicted the sadistic torment, rape and ultimately murder of a character. There was no "bad guy" who was so clearly deranged and depraved, let alone had been able to form a dysfunctional family with other evil nutters.

If you are a fan of horror films you have to examine the history: without this film - and even acknowledging Last House has many flaws (and it really does) - then we would not have seen the sea-change which led to some of the greatest horror movies ever being made.

It might not have the power to "scare" the way it did 35+ years ago, but it still disturbs. It's a landmark horror movie, and one which should not be ignored by true horror and/or Wes Craven fans.

 Excellent!

I'm really surprised by the number of negative reviews here. I recently watched this dvd for the first time and was very impressed.

Out of all the video nasties I've seen, I would rate this as one of the better ones. David Hess, as always, is fantastic as the lead villain and the the supporting characters are well cast, with the excpetion of the guy who looks far too old to be the son of Hess' character!

I would have no hesitation in recommending this, especially for new fans to the horror genre, this is a great place to start.

And if you buy this and like it, I'd highly recommend House on the Edge of the Park!

There's good news and bad news

The good news is, this is a superb DVD package for a film that created the American slasher movie genre (paving the way for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Friday The 13th). Comes with filmmakers & actors commentaries; making-of docu (40mins); different version of the film; previously unseen uncut footage; outtakes; soundtrack featurette; David Hess interview in England; an extra Wes Craven short film; plus disc #3 devotes itself to a stand-alone 90min documentary about the birth and development of the slasher movie, with its own extras of commentaries and additional interviews. All in all, well worth buying if you're a horror fan.

The bad news is, the film itself is total and utter garbage! I'm a very liberal soul, but how anyone can like this piece of cinematic filth and ineptitude is beyond me. Nobody expects a filmmaker's first attempt to win Best Picture, but for it to turn out this bad is shocking to say the least. Barebones direction, empty script, amateur dramatics, ridiculous comic interludes - how this film has endured for 37yrs with a worldwide fanbase staggers me. All that said, it is an important film that should never have been banned (except maybe for its criminal waste of film stock!!!), but it is a piece of film genre history. So if you're a mad movie geek like me, you'll want this Ultimate Edition in your collection, just like the Special Editions of all the greatest films ever made you already have stacked around your home cinema system.
