Andrew "Large" Largeman is returning home to New Jersey for the first time in nine years to attend his mother's funeral. A struggling actor in Los Angeles, he's been living under clouds of medication prescribed by his psychiatrist father (Ian Holm). After drifting through the funeral with the same emotional numbness he's felt for years, he reconnects with old friends Mark (Peter Sarsgaard), a gravedigger, and Albert (Denis O'Hare), a millionaire who invented noiseless Velcro.

In a doctor's office, he meets ebullient Sam (Natalie Portman), an epileptic whose lust for life inspires Andrew to feel things that his medication long denied him. Over four days, he develops feelings for Sam he didn't know he was capable of, and faces up to the resentment his father holds toward him about an accident that happened long ago.

Written, directed and starring Scrubs star, Zach Braff, Garden State is his debut film. Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

     My favourite film

This film is my definitive favourite film (aside from Back to the future) that will always cheer me up.

A simple story of a man who's lost touch with his emotions returning back home and the incredible journey of self discovery and love he finds there.

Garden State is brilliantly scripted and acted, with a beautiful soundtrack that will take you on an emoitional rollercoaster. If there was 1 film to see before you die, this is it.

     A reflection on Life

I personally liked this movie very much. While the story type has been done before, Garden States uniqueness comes from the fact that it has fantastic actors (especially Zach Braff and Natalie Portman), a quirky sense of humour and boasts an amazing soundtrack.
I found this film to be a beautiful and reflective story about life, and also the connections we have with family and friends. And whats more it isn't too light, nor too heavy in its tone. I recommend this film to everyone.

Now some people would watch this and think, "what possesed me to put this in the DVD player?", others would think it's one of the most original, heart warming films ever to reach your DVD player.
It focuses on a young man named Andrew Largeman (Braff) who is a one time actor, and now works at a waiter.
With one phone call by his father, Andrew visits his hometown, where he meets old friends and a girl named Sam (Portman). Essentually she is everything he is not, lively, happy, makes life worth living.
Due to a series of events Andrew begins living life like he has never done before, and faces his inner demons, and settle a relationship with his father.

The film was simply amazing, just watching two very different characters interact together and watching them progress was very touching, and with the story being as good as the acting, this is a film Braff fans would not want to miss, or anyone who has ever felt that their life was 'lifeless'.

if you were expecting a slapstick comedy then this isnt for you. but if you were looking for a witty, clever comedy with an emotional punch, then this is for you. great soundtrack, well shot. a good watch. one of those movies you usally find on at 3 in the morning, but definitly a good find.

A film with which you will fall in love

I saw half of this movie on sky movies one night and i fell in love with it but missed the second half and it was probably about 2 weeks before i found out what it was called.

I already liked zach braff, as on the odd occasion i have watched scrubs, but this film really introduced me to natalie portman. I absolutely love her in this film, she reminds me of one of my friends in the way she is zany - as apposed to the lying.
