Review

Andrew "Large" Largeman is returning home to New Jersey for the first time in nine years to attend his mother's funeral. A struggling actor in Los Angeles, he's been living under clouds of medication prescribed by his psychiatrist father (Ian Holm). After drifting through the funeral with the same emotional numbness he's felt for years, he reconnects with old friends Mark (Peter Sarsgaard), a gravedigger, and Albert (Denis O'Hare), a millionaire who invented noiseless Velcro.

In a doctor's office, he meets ebullient Sam (Natalie Portman), an epileptic whose lust for life inspires Andrew to feel things that his medication long denied him. Over four days, he develops feelings for Sam he didn't know he was capable of, and faces up to the resentment his father holds toward him about an accident that happened long ago.

Written, directed and starring Scrubs star, Zach Braff, Garden State is his debut film. Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Watching this after becoming a fan of the tv show of 'Scrubs', I decided to give it a try. A certain story that some viewers might find 'dull' and at most points - depressing. There is no doubt that this film and it's theme is based around the lead character (Zach Braff), however, shows a different acting talent to which he shows in Scrubs. Directing, writing and acting, he doesn't let his fans down in this film. Although some parts you may think to be a little over the edge, as the story opens there is a huge possibility you will be shocked. Garden state is certainly a film that is worth a watch, and at the price, it worth a buy, too. Good script and interesting scenes, Braff shows a future force in film making that we might see more of later on.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars a gem, truly a gem

Many of the reviews have said it already but this is a great story which is well executed and has the speech and visual touches that make it memorable.
What is quite surprising is just how good the acting is. Zach Braff of 'Scrubs' fame writes, directs and stars in this very personal film and Natalie Portman, Ian Holm and the rest of the cast put together a quite surprising and charming voyage of discovery when returning home movie.
I really did like it and while its not quite 5 stars for me, this is the kind of film we really want to see more of - oh, and a great soundtrack too!

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Directorial Debut! *****

The script for this film is pure genius and was written by Zach Braff himself who delivers an amazing performance as a forlorn and aimless character with a turbulent family life. Braff is ably supported by Natalie Portman who compliments Braff's character with her quirky but cute performance. The soundtrack to this film is perfect and the story one of the best I've seen. You will be left feeling incredibly uplifted and the film will have you laughing endlessly.
