After a shaky season 2, and an improved season 3, Doctor Who Series 4 for me was definitely a big improvement on what had come before. This was partly because the episodes here are generally stronger than some of the previous ones but also its to do with the suprisingly good casting of Catherine Tate.

By this point David Tennant had really grown into the part so he rattles off the dialogue at top speed with great ease although there are times where he does overdo the wild eyed routine but generally David does very well here. But Catherine Tate really proves herself to be a really good dramatic actress especially in the episodes "Fires of Pompeii" "Turn Left" and the season finale.

Some of my favs of the season include the already mentioned "Fires of Pompeii" with Peter Capaldi playing a goodie (after seeing him in The Thick of It I can't see him as a goodie!). "The Doctor's Daughter" which introduces Georgina Moffatt as well.. the Doc's daughter which is good fun.… more »

"The Doctor's Daughter" which introduces Georgina Moffatt as well.. the Doc's daughter which is good fun. "Unicorn and the wasp" which is a really good whodunnit tribute to Agatha Christie. "Turn left" in which Donna sees a fortune teller who asks what would happen if she never met the Doctor. However one of my main favs funnily enough has to be "Midnight" which is a real departure for Doctor Who, where the Doctor and his companion separate, and the Doc goes on a shuttle trip that goes badly, the episode is unique and creepy.

There are few lesser episodes of course with "Voyage of the Damned" being one of the worst new Doctor Who specials (Kylie shouldn't be in Dr Who!), and the "Planet of the Ood" was pretty so so, as was the Sontaran two parter.

But apart from all that Series 4 proved to be a really good series, which also manages a poignant ending with "Journey's End". Its definitely one of the best new series so far and its showing the show going in the right direction. So I'd definitely recommend buying if you haven't seen Series 4 yet.
