Stephen Collins is an ambitious politician. Cal McAffrey is a well-respected investigative journalist and Stephen's ex-campaign manager. En route to work one morning, Stephen's research assistant mysteriously falls to her death on the London Underground. It's not long before revelations of their affair hit the headlines.

Meanwhile a suspected teenage drug dealer is found shot dead. These (apparently unconnected) events expose a dangerous habit within modern government of dancing too closely with the corporate devil. Friendships are tested and lives are put on the line as an intricate web of lies unfolds...

     They don't get any better

This BBC series starring Bill Nighy, John Simm, David Morrissey, Kelly MacDonald and James McAvoy is possibly the best conspiracy thriller to leave the British shores in recent times. It is a political thriller set in modern Britain (shown in 2003) and has a tight well written plot by Paul Abbott. The director, David Yates deserves special mention of pulling great performances from a stellar British cast who are all perfect in the roles they play. The whole series should be watched carefully as there are so many little sub scenes going on(Syd for example saluting and generally taking the pee). All in all a gripping and most rewarding series - if you like good well written and well acted British TV series you should love this.

Every so often British television will churn out a series which is absolute perfection. This is one of those series. Paul Abbot has written a suspenseful and concise thriller which has more twists and turns than a helter skelter and delivers some career-defining performances from Bill Nighy, David Morissey and John Simm, as well as having the superb support from James McAvoy and Kelly McDonald. Fast-paced and tense from the off-set, State of Play can be considered amongst the best of thriller TV.

     Truly top class

This is one of the best UK tv shows I have ever seen. Well acted and gripping. Much better than the US film version just completed. They couldn't have picked a better cast and the storyline is just superb with plenty of twists to keep you gripped till the very last second. If you haven't seen this then you must and at this price it is a complete steal!!! I cannot recommend highly enough!!

This is a simply brilliant TV show that I would strongly suggest anyone watch. I was hooked from beginning to end by the rivetting plot, fine acting, good production values and quality direction.
TV drama does not come much finer than this.
