  Classic Clint...

After Soldiers attacked his family Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood) is intent on revenge. After a revenge mission Josey Wales becomes a wanted Outlaw. He then travels with a Native American, a combination that brings a slightly humorous element to the film. The film is set along side the backdrop of the American Civil War.
This is another classic western as well as a classic Clint Eastwood film. Clints portrayal of Josey Wales is truly iconic and has the audience willing him to succeed. The film itself is a great film up there with other classics like Unforgiven, The Good, Bad and Ugly, Open Range and True Grit.

  we really whipped them Josey.

Total classic western, clint in one of the best. The story line is very hard a farmer that looses his family & everything, he then begins to fight for payback & then for his life in pretty much how it would have been during this dark history of America.

  a traditional war-western

situated during and after the war between North & South, this story handles about the transformation of a honest farmer (who's family got cruelly killed by some sadistic redlegs) into a nationwide searched outlaw. it's a story about the personal war between this outlaw and politicians/warleaders/, between good and bad, revenge, friendship, loyalty. in the good old tradition of the real western. with clint eastwood in one of his best performances. a must see for the true westernlover.

This is one of those western that clint made during the 70s, 80s, and 90s that really kept the western genre alive. He puts on his typical good show as the main hero but also look out for chief dan george who is also pretty good. Really classic stuff, worth any price

  Eastwood terriffic as director/star

Clint Eastwood is outstanding as director and star in this savage American Civil War western. Eastwood plays a man whose family have been killed by murderous soldiers. The only thing on his mind is vengeance. And from here he goes on a mission to track them down, along the way meeting a quiet girl(Sondra Locke) and an eccentric Native American(Chief Dan George). A superb film

In my humble opinion, the screenplay for Clint Eastwood's 1976 film The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of the best ever written in American Cinema. It is a shame that there isn't a transcript of it online. Chief Dan George has some of the best lines, including a great speech about meeting the Minister of the Interior, who on hearing the gripes of the Native Americans, replied: "Endeavour to persevere".

"We left and thought about the phrase 'endeavour to persevere'. When we had thought about it long enough...we declared war on the Union".

The film itself, I believe to be in the upper echelons of the western genre. I think there is a strong argument that places The Outlaw Josey Wales in the top five greatest westerns ever made. In a genre as rich and deep as the western; that is certainly a significant achievement.

Another great aspect of this film is the duplicity and contradictory nature of Josey Wales himself, who is almost entirely amoral and yet simultaneously moral throughout. The film moves along at a very measured and brisk pace, with events unfolding with real narrative purpose and drive.

The atmosphere of rebellion, and themes of redemption and revenge all serve to make The Outlaw Josey Wales a thrilling, entertaining and very well made polemic on the causalities war.
