Review

Feature-length TV film directed by Anthony Minghella and co-scripted with Richard Curtis, based on the best-selling series of novels by Alexander McCall Smith. The film stars Grammy Award-winning singer Jill Scott as Precious Remotswe, a Botswanan woman who sets up the country's first female-owned detective agency. This is the first BBC drama to be filmed entirely on location in Botswana and the last work Minghella completed before his untimely death.

The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency is a poignant and passionate story chronicling the adventures of Precious Ramotswe.

Eminently sensible, she's the wise proprietor of the only female-owned detective agency in Botswana. She investigates cases, helps people solve problems in their lives, and falls in love with the highly respectable owner of a local garage.

Precious sells her late father's cows and moves to the city to become Botswana's finest - and only - female private detective. Her methods may be unconventional but she's got warmth, wit and canny intuition on her side, not to mention the support of her friends Mr JLB Matekoni, proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors and Mma Makutsi, the fastest-typing secretary in Gaborone.

Precious needs as much help as she can get, to solve the mysteries of a missing finger, a dubious Daddy, a cheating husband and as she heads into dark and dangerous territory of witchcraft.

From all that we have seen so far (including the Easter special from last year), this show has been breathtaking. An amazing piece of television and for those who don't already know of Jill Scott as an incredible singer/songwriter in her own right, it see's her stepping out into the acting world (she has done other acting projects though) with such ease. This episode gives you a little taster as what to expect with the series that began last month on the BBC, a series that has surpassed all expectations and leaves you waiting for more. I have not read the books, but after seeing this pilot episode and the series on the BBC so far, I definitely wouldn't mind checking them out.

I could certainly not imagine any other cast for this, it has been picked beautifully and Jill Scott has proved that she is indeed, a very talented actress too.

I've loved the No 1 Ladies detective series since I was introduced to them a couple of years ago, so naturally i was excited and a little worried about whether the film would be a faithful adaptation.

This is a beautiful film, directed by Anthony Minghella (sadly his last film) and scripted by Richard Curtis and it's amazing to see the characters from these much loved books really come to life. Jill Scott is amazing as Mma Ramotswe - i couldn't imagine anyone else.

If you loved the books then you'll definitely enjoy this.
