When I first heard of this film I thought that it would be pretty meaty, powerful stuff considering that it would be handling the very delicate situation of anti-Semitism. However I should have realised that considering it was made in 1947 it would be quite tame. This disappointed me a little as the film does not give you even the slightest insight into what the Jews were really experiencing during that time, making the most crucial anti-Semitic points to be when a child is called "a dirty Jew" in the playground. Nonetheless this is a great movie, especially for all Gregory Peck fans. The two leads Gregory Peck and Dorothy McGuire are absolutely brilliant, displaying such intensity in their scenes together and bringing to life the differing views of anti-Semitism, whilst Dean Stockwell is a typical scene-stealing child star at the height of his childhood career. Anne Revere gives much gusto as the down-to-earth wisecracking mother of Greogry Peck, whilst Celeste Holm is dissapointing… more »

I love Celeste Holm, but heaven knows why she won an Oscar for her performance as she has so little to do in the film. So overall you have a good film whose main problems are that the script is a little too tame in dealing with anti-Semitism. However the leading cast makes the film worth it in the end.
