Russell Crowe and Al Pacino come together for `The Insider' - a film nominated for six Academy Awards, including best Actor (Crowe) and Best Director (Mann).

This suspense drama is based on the true story of Lowell Bergman's (Pacino) battle with CBS media executives to air an interview with Jeffery Wigand (Crowe) -which will expose the tobacco industry as corrupt and leave them liable to expensive law suits.

The film primarily concentrates around the relationship between Bergman and Wigand. It initially focuses on the decision by Wigand to agree to shoot the interview, the external pressures applied to prevent him doing this, and ultimate cost of this to his personal life. It then shifts to Bergman's battle to honour the promises he made to Wingand and his fight for his journalistic beliefs: the riveting drama is all the more powerful for being based on a true story.

Clever film.... ofcourse we expect alot from a movie that is directed by Michael Mann and staring Oscar winners Russell Crowe and legend Al Pacino... and they delivered!! This film has a great conspirisory behind it although to be honest, the first 30 minutes is boring, but don't give up on it!!!

Russell Crowe gives a fantastic portrayal of a man struggling with confidance due to being blackmailed. As per usual Pacino delivered a text book supporting role and occasionally showed his legendary rage!!! overall a very good, underated film that also has a good cameo role by Chris plummer, neither wonder it was nominated for 7 Oscars!!!

One of the Most Stunning, Intriguing, Challenging, Well Acted and Directed films of the 90s
A film about a Tobacco industry whistleblower, should never be allowed to be THIS good.
The Story is tense and keeps you on edge all the way through.
This is in my opinion part of Director Michael Mann's Perfect 90s Movie Trilogy, the other 2 being Last of the Mohicans and Heat.
The crisp Blue cinematography and the Excellent Soundtrack add a real sense of Atmosphere and at times Danger.
Now we come to the ACTING. And you will hard pressed to find a movie where the 3 main Protagonists are not worthy of all the Awards and Accolades that can be bestowed on a Actor.
Russell Crowe gives in my opinion his Career best performance here, he won the Oscar for Gladiator, but should also have won for this movie.
Al Pacino gives one of his last Great Performances, and should have had a Supporting Actor Nomination.

And the fact that Christopher Plummer managed to get overlooked by the Oscars for Best Supporting Actor is Shocking. He is Scintillating in this movie. If a performance like his can't get an Oscar nomination. They should stop with the Oscars altogether.

Anyway I think I have made my point, and a few others.
Who would have thought you could get so much satisfaction from Tobacco.

 A different kind of thriller

| | See all Poshman's reviews (15)

The fact that this is based on a true story makes it all the more interesting, with Crowe and Pacino putting in excellent performances. Admittedly, the first half an hour does drag rather, and it would be easy to turn off and miss out. However, that would be a big mistake to make as it bursts into life after Crowe's character's life and position has been explained.

I say this is a different kind of thriller, and this is because it doesn't lead to an all guns blazing shoot out at the end of the film. This doesn't mean that it loses the tension that a good thriller needs, with death threats made against the family keeping these levels high.

All in all its a very good film, that can be viewed as a stand alone thriller, or as the true story that it portrays.

 Great performances.

An enjoyable ensemble piece, perhaps a lttle flat and predictable. What turns average fare into good are the performances of Crowe and Plummer. Pacino frankly cruises this one , Crowe shows just how versatile and sensitive he can be and Plummer radiates confidence as he brilliantly captures the character of the aging T.V. interviewer. There are several excellent turns from the supporting cast too, including Rip Torn and Steve Toblowsky.
