A different kind of thriller

The fact that this is based on a true story makes it all the more interesting, with Crowe and Pacino putting in excellent performances. Admittedly, the first half an hour does drag rather, and it would be easy to turn off and miss out. However, that would be a big mistake to make as it bursts into life after Crowe's character's life and position has been explained.
I say this is a different kind of thriller, and this is because it doesn't lead to an all guns blazing shoot out at the end of the film. This doesn't mean that it loses the tension that a good thriller needs, with death threats made against the family keeping these levels high.
All in all its a very good film, that can be viewed as a stand alone thriller, or as the true story that it portrays.
Great performances.

An enjoyable ensemble piece, perhaps a lttle flat and predictable. What turns average fare into good are the performances of Crowe and Plummer. Pacino frankly cruises this one , Crowe shows just how versatile and sensitive he can be and Plummer radiates confidence as he brilliantly captures the character of the aging T.V. interviewer. There are several excellent turns from the supporting cast too, including Rip Torn and Steve Toblowsky.
Clever film.... ofcourse we expect alot from a movie that is directed by Michael Mann and staring Oscar winners Russell Crowe and legend Al Pacino... and they delivered!! This film has a great conspirisory behind it although to be honest, the first 30 minutes is boring, but don't give up on it!!!
Russell Crowe gives a fantastic portrayal of a man struggling with confidance due to being blackmailed. As per usual Pacino delivered a text book supporting role and occasionally showed his legendary rage!!! overall a very good, underated film that also has a good cameo role by Chris plummer, neither wonder it was nominated for 7 Oscars!!!
