Being a huge Henning Mankell fan and having read all of his books at least once I sat down to watch this on the TV with a critical eye wondering if they could portray the characters and the stories as well as the books. From the opening I was hooked. Kenneth Brannagh is a fantastic Wallander he got the character and was totally believable in this role, the supporting cast who are paramount in the books were well cast and the filming showed Sweden to be beautiful. I loved the fact that everything is in Swedish apart from the dialogue. Its a must for every Mankell fan and my only wish is that he would write more books. There is a Swedish version of Wallander which starts from where the books finish with new stories for the characters and this too is fantastic even with subtitles you can watch it and get engrossed. I loved it and hope the BBC make the rest of the Wallander books into this fantastic series. Wonderful.
Well done to the bbc for showing this a very good drama set in sweden hope theres more to come
Watched it on TV, thought it was great. Watched it again on DVD, it is fantastic! An interesting take on the Swedish series of books and TV programmes. Brannagh is totally believable.
Everything about this production is 1st class.
Music, titles, very good camera angles (recently emulated to some degree by "Red Riding" series). Most notably, the natural acting - and the natural appearance in hair, clothing and makeup of all concerned - helps the audience seem more like a fly-on-the-wall of everyday life rather than watching a drama.
Hopefully there will be future series?
I was a little confused about the BBC's Detective Wallander but on further research found that this is taken from the Swedish Wallander Books. There was already a Wallander Series made in Sweden.
I was a little wary that reproducing a show the concept maybe slightly diluted but this is a great effort. Kenneth Branagh makes an amazing Wallander. He becomes involved in all kinds of horrific cases. The episodes are well made, well filmed and very engrossing. Reminds me a little of the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy and other Swedish Productions like Let The Right One In. Well worth checking out although i might have to give the Swedish series a try?!
