Being a reader of the graphic novel by Frank Miller I was sceptical about the transition of Sin City from page to screen, but when I heard in 2003 that Robert Rodriguez (Creator of Troublemaker studios) was doing it, all my worries disappeared. In my opinion Rodriguez is an exciting and very underrated film director. You never know what he will do next and from a directorial point of view he's not scared to try new and interesting ways of shooting a scene. The only other director as unpredictable and refreshing is Quentin Tarrantino, who guest directed a scene in the film. There are not many films that have no faults in them, but in my opinion this is one of them. The films beauty will make your mouth water. The story development is smooth with the character plot lines integrating effortlessly and the balance between violence and humour is dead on. The actors' performances are sensational. Mickey Rourke is excellent as Marv (Oscar worthy I thought) his best acting performance since Angel Heart. Bruce Willis plays Hartigan, a cop with a vow to protect a stripper Nancy, played by Jessica Alba (if all goes according to plan, my future wife - fingers crossed), what grace, what elegance, WHAT CURVES!!! Then there's Clive Owen (Britain rules!) as Dwight, Brittany Murphy as Shellie, Rosario Dawson as Gail and Benicio Del Toro as Jackie, along with some great guest performances from Elijah Wood, Michael Madsen, Devon Aoki, Michael Clarke Duncan, Carla Gugino and Josh Hartnett. Don't think about it - just buy it.
This is one of the most gorgeous movies ever made, it is an absolute visual feast.
Watching Sin City is like watching a comic book brought to life, incredibly faithful to Miller's original stories and characters this film is a real triumph.
Only downpoint is the dialogue is a little clunky and cheesy in places, but the visuals more than compensate for that minor niggle.
Everyone should see this film.
An truly original and striking anthology with comic book style stories and visuals. I think it really comes down to whether you go with the flow or resist. If you go with it, you will love it. If you resist, you will hate it. I absolutely loved it. For me, the best film of the year.
Sorry for all the puns but it would be sin to miss this film. My only regret was that I didn't get the opportunity to see this on the big screen. After seeing this on DVD my first thoughts were wow! It looked sensational and I loved the dark and edgy crime noir feel to it. Beautiful babes and monstrous villians, it had some fantastic characters. None more so than Mickey Rourke's 'Marv', a psychotic killer with a sometimes human side to him, and Elijah Wood's silent killer (particularly creepy following his turn as loveable Frodo Baggins). These two share a memorable encounter in the film where their dark sides are exposed to their fullest. Unique and simply fantastic. Don't miss it.
This film is drastically under-rated by those who don't like good films. It is not a Pup Fiction rip off, it is in a whole league of its own, using film noir mixed with effective use of color which enhances the theme of extreme beauty and evil. Memorable characters, great actors, and not one but TWO A list directors (who manage to get a decent performance out of Jessica Alba, now that is something). Amazingly gritty and powerfully violent at points, this film is not the feint-hearted. It deserves 5 stars and should be considered the best film of 2005 and probibly the best of this decade.
