Sheer Pleasure

This film tells the story of a family at the start of the Second World War, with all their fears and uncertainties. It has great performances all round & everyone seems to enjoy themselves. The school sequences are some of the funniest & the wonderful grandad, played by Ian Bannen is a real character of his time.
This film provides a really good account of the period & is a sheer pleasure to watch, again & again.
The language is so unobtrusive you'd be hard to remember it but is an important part of the story.
Watch this film & it will tell you all you need to know about a working class family coping with the trials & tribulations of war.
A lovely film

Shown through the eyes of a child during the 2nd world war. Brilliant and very true to life. Had me laughing and crying in parts too.

This is a truly great British war time film, set through the eyes of a child during the Blitz of london. The film is very funny and very well observed and a great performance from the kid. The same cannot be said for all the other performances as some do border on dodgy. But the film is such a pleasure to watch, this can be forgiven. Like some of the other reviews on the page I also think the given 15 certificate a little too strong, and the certificate would be better lowering it to a 12 as there is nothing really bad that the family cannot watch.
With no strong violence and only two "F" words and the mildest of sex scenes, the film is missing it's true audiance potential.
Forget the 15 certificate, this is great family entertainment and a great history lesson for the kids.
A 15 Rating?

This is a great movie set during WW2, but a 15 rating? Come on now, we were shown this during primary school! So there is a lot of cursing going on, but still an enjoyable film.
a truly inspiring and funny acount of the times

Great story and would be better if the language was moderated. Great history lesson for all but it is a pity that the film cannot be shown to all. Yes I know it has a rating of 15. So many films are ruined by language and I hate to say this is one of them.
