This sequel to the 1989 movie is in my humble opinion a better film than the first. Again directed by Burton, the film is a perfect example of style over substance, as the plot like his 1989 movie is a total mess. But this film is more to do with mood and characters than anything else, and this is where thie film really counts. Batman Returns is more of a gothic fairytail than anything else.
De vito as the Penguin is superb under his makeup and fat suit, Keaton again wears the cape well, but the real star of the film is Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, she oozes sex appeal, and leaves the jaw on the floor with her beauty.
The snow bound winter setting of Gotham is also Beautiful, and really give the feel of a black and white comic book.
Don't watch this film if you think you are going to see a film with a propper story structure, but watch this film to see the wizardly gothic urban fairytale by Tim Burton.

While many sequels struggle to beat the popularity of the original, Tim Burton's Batman Returns managed not only to become a fantastic Batmovie, but an amazing movie full stop.

With Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne/Batman already established in 1989's Batman, he comfortably returns to take on various foes. Firstly, the recurring terrorist circus mob with clowns apparently in tribute to the Joker, secondly the freakish Penguin (played fantastically by Danny DeVito) who seems to be hiding his intentions, thirdly Max Schrek (Christopher Walken, on usual great form) whose manipulative ways play all parties, and finally Selina Kyle/Catwoman (iconically played by Michelle Pfeiffer) who seems hellbent on hurting everyone who wronged her whilst struggling with her inner demons.

The characters are all fully explored and deep, and the winter setting complete with haunting Danny Elfman score make the movie simply rich with fantasy and emotion.

Some fans regard Returns as the last great Batmovie before Christopher Nolan boosted life back into the series with Batman Begins, and some still believe Returns has yet to be overtaken as favourite. If you want to see the best villains, the best performances, the sleekest vehicles and the greatest portrayal of a feminist in film, the Batman Returns is for you.

I am a massive batman fan. the first batman film was very good. however this sequel is not one of my favourite batman films. i hate this batman film, this film is only batman in name and is more of a
tim burton film.
this is way to dark and feel that burton makes this film into a macabre bizarre, pointless art film. the penguin in this film is a deformed freak, who lives in the sewers and spews black mucus from his mouth, this is not a batman villian, this is a tim burton villian. i love the first batman, and i believe that makers should have kept the same tone from the first film and used it for the second film. also in the film batman is made out to be as twisted nutter in a batsuit. this film is odd and sad, Heroism and excitement, that were in the first film are missing in this film.
all this is tim burton having fun at the expense of the batman legend.

Ah Cat Woman! This film is darker and moodier if that's possible. Again Keaton brings the dark Knight to life with great support along the way. Shame about the the other Batman films (apart form Batman Begins that is).

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Gloomy and creepy!

Batman Returns is a fantastic action movie. It has its scary, psychological scenes with the villians which I find engrossing in a comic book adaption. Micheal Keaton is at his best as Bruce Wayne/Batman with a wonderful supporting cast like Michelle Pfeffier, Danny DeVito and Christopher Walken. In my opinion, the best Batman movie! *****

Easily the best of Burton's 'Batman' movies (and second only to 'Begins' in best Batman film full stop) 'Batman Returns' fine-tuned the elements present in the original and produced a comic book masterpiece. Though still Batman in spirit 'Returns' also felt very much like a Tim Burton film with its snow-covered backdrops, circus clowns, and weird lineup of villainous freaks. Anyone who remembered Burgess Meredith's portrayal as The Penguin in the original TV series and film was sure to be gob-smacked when they saw Danny DeVito portrayal of the flippered felon. Virtually unrecognisable this Penguin was every bit a freak of nature a flippered, fish-munching, slimy nutjob with an army of penguins and a vast array of dangerous umbrellas. If that wasn't enough we also got Catwoman. Sewn into an impossibly snug leather catsuit Michelle Pfeiffer made a generation of movie-goers go weak at the knees and the ambiguous conclusion whetted our appetites as to a return from this fantastically foxy feline (but not, alas, for the abomination that was Halle Berry's 'Catwoman' movie) The penguin assault at the conclusion is fantastically staged and harks back to a day when SFX were constructed with more than just computers. Fantastic, stylish, dark, brooding and kinky as hell 'Batman Returns' isn't your everday kiddie movie. In fact, McDonalds were quick to withdraw their sponsorship of the movie when they clapped eyes on the finished product. Would you like S&M with your burger, sir?
