Can They Be Stopped?

Ever present, ever listening, the evil dead lie in wait for the one ancient incantation that will give them license to possess the living. Watch the horror as five vacationing college students unwittingly resurrect these slumbering demons, and are forced into battle with the supernatural forces that occupy the forests and dark bowels of man's domain. The innocent must suffer. The guilty must be punished. One by one, the students are possessed by these demons whose thirst for revenge is insatiable. As the night wanes, only one man remains... Ash. He must now defend himself while trying to uncover the horrible secret of The Evil Dead.

Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead is an undisputed horror classic - iconic, highly influential and quite without equal. Its legendary reputation is highly deserved and its potent blend of laughs and scares remainns as powerful today as it was back in 1981. Darker, and far scarier, than the sequel (which still remains top-draw moviemaking) Raimi's original movie is a tightly wound amalgamation of various influences honed, perfected and crafted into a tense, gory whole. Unbound by cinematic convention, Raimi amazes with his virtuoso camerawork, not to mention his stunning use of ghoulish, omnipresent sound effects to create a bleak, paranoid atmosphere and a raft of sudden, effective shocks. The film was initially condemned to the infamous Video Nasties label of the mid-'80s and it's really not surprising why - the notorious tree rape sequence (here reinstated in its full, uncut form) still has the power to shock today and provides modern wanabee horror directors a perfect lesson in how horror should be done. It's not perfect by all means - the acting often leaves a lot to be desired and the effects are very obviously created on a low budget but the sheer energy and creativity is still there in bucketloads. The sequels ramped up the humour levels to Looney Tunes proportions whilst gradually turning the horror dial down. And though I continue to adore all three films for their various merits the original, for me, remains the best of the bunch. Delivered here in a fantastically packaged 'Book of the Dead' the extras are fantastic. Top of the pile would have to be Bruce 'The Chin' Campbell's wonderfully witty and self-deprecating commentary plus his hilariously bizarre 'Fanalysis' documentary showing the frankly terrifying extremes that fans can go to to celebrate their idols. Grab a copy today, you definitely won't be disappointed. Even better, put it on your shelf and it's sure to quickly become a talking point amongst visitors....

This is an awesome cult film from the 80's... It's gruesome and scary but in a stupid and funny way that seem to compliment each other... I could bor you with loads of facts but better than that... Watch the film... This and Evil Dead 2:Dead By Dawn are awesome... Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness is more of a comedy... But Bruce Campbell is a legend... If you have a weekend with nothing to do watch the Evil Dead Trilogy and wait for 'My Name is Bruce' to be released to give you a big grin :)

 Old style scary!
