Threads

There are very few films/documentaries that I would say are guaranteed to have a profound impact on anyone; but if there is one, its "Threads". The film is essentially a timeline, documenting the events leading up to, during and after a devastating nuclear war. The documentary style that is apparent throughout the film just seems to function in making the whole thing so real. And that is the truly horrifying nature of this film; the fact that the events within could of, and could still happen.
We watch in awe as society is brought to its knees, and really empathise with the characters as they face this crushing ordeal. There are scenes which are downright graphic but by no means do I get the impression that these were put in for shock value. They seem to be included just to add to the realism. I heartily recommend this film. It has been wonderfully produced and really stands out as a fantastic piece of film in its own right. It tells its story with guts and determination that are missing within the industry. If there was ever a film that was fundamentally "anti-nuke", its this.

Last summery. There is not another film out there quite like this. Threads will take you to a very, VERY dark place. There are really no words to describe it, and even now i feel as though this rather poorly written review doesnt do it justice.

Perhaps the most depressing film ever produced - what could be worse than having your country decimated by massive amounts of nuclear weapons? Saying that, it is a hugely impressive endeavour even by 1980s standards and still holds up as a highly important and terrifying film today.

Not only showing the effects of the paranoia in the build up to the attack - panic buying, protests and rioting - the attack itself and the mass confusion and terror felt, and then progresses to show what the future holds for a nuclear ravaged society, right up to 13 years after the bombs.

While this is perhaps one of the most important films you will ever see, the extra features here are an opportunity that was sadly missed. An audio commentary by some of the cast or even the writers, a documentary on nuclear paranoia or the creation of the Protect and Survive films, or how nuclear war has influenced modern day songs, films and TV would have been amazing.
