The original BBC drama that shocked a generation.
Set in the paranoia of nuclear war, this chilling and BAFTA-award winning BBC2 drama was aired causing outrage and anxiety amongst the viewing public due to its graphic and realistic storytelling of a possible nuclear strike. After its initial airing Threads became a national talking point and became a powerful and terrifying glimpse into a post holocaust world after a devastating nuclear bomb. Even more terrifying was that this 'drama' could in fact easily become a living nightmare. Set in Sheffield, the story follows Ruth and her fiancee who are looking forward to beginning a new life with a baby and a new flat when suddenly the unthinkable happens and the world is suddenly erupted into a full scale nuclear war. After the attack the landscape is changed dramatically with the survivors scavenging through the devastation and corpses, trying to forage what they can; nurses in hospitals unable to do anything other than comfort the dying; and a society is descended back to its most basic level.

This made for TV movie shocked Britain way back in 1984 when it was first shown on TV, at the time it was the height of the cold war, as the West and the Soviet Block had it's nuclear missles pointing at each other. This deals with a a nuclear detonation over Sheffield. At the time of release I was at high school, and such was the impact of the film, we were made to watch it in class, The film resonated with us teenagers at the time, as we lived around the area the film was based. Now all these years later the film seems tamer, but still has a cold impact that sends a shiver down the spine, and the question "what if?" still comes to mind. It's the years after the attack that the film has most impact, as we still try to hold the threads of humanity together. This is still a film of great impact and far better than the soap opera American version The Day After.
Also it's a reminder of how simple things were back in 1984, as then at least we knew who our enemy was.
Well worth re-watching!
We were made to watch this when i was at school!!! At the age of 14, this film was purely terrifying! I had nightmares for weeks !! The images it produced stayed with me always.
Now im 30 something and the images it left with me are still as strong - the fact that it is a story which could very well become reality makes it even more powerful and thought provoking.
Although this is an old film the who whole thing is portrayed as being exceptionally believable.
Prepare to be shocked, disturbed and mortified....
Easily the most scary film/documentary I have ever watched. It's chilling and well dramatized, I can see why it was banned in America it really blew the myth away of duck and cover.
