A chilling reinvention of the unforgettable 1970's series - written by Primeval writer, Adrian Hodges and based on Terry Nation's original novel.

Left bewildered and numb, untouched by a virus that had swept across the world destroying all but a random selection of desperate souls, these are the 'lucky ones' left alive when so many died. This lonely few now have to step into a strange new world where everything that was once safe and familiar is now strange and dangerous.

Among those struggling for survival are Abby, a devoted mother with a missing son; Greg, a loner, hiding the pain of his past; Anya, a doctor who has seen too much; Al, a playboy who becomes surrogate father to Najid; and Tom Price, handsome, dangerous and a high security prisoner before the virus hit.

In the ghost cities and empty fields, power, water and food supplies are scarce. Just to stay alive they will have to band together, utilise their talents and learn new skills. But can they all be trusted? And what new trials await those trying to rebuild a dead civilisation?

OK! I'll begin by saying that people who give this a bad review are likely to be fans of the original series. Of course, it's had to be updated to appeal to a more modern audience. With shows such as LOST and 24 which move along at a fast pace, Survivors has had to kick off quite quickly in order to capture audience imagination. And it has. 3 episodes in and the show is amazing, hitting a new high every week, focusing on one particular group of survivors as they interact with others. The show is gripping, the actors brilliant and the general storylines brilliant. It's so nice to have a genuine drama made on our side of the Atlantic instead of having to rely on American imports. Buy and you will not be disappointed. I do hope the BBC see sense and commission a second season. It certainly is worth it. Hopefully the show will be around for a long time as 6 episodes really does not do it justice.

I hope it Survives for a second series...

Really good series, wish it could have been longer, but can't have everything and am sure it'll be back for a second series as it ends on a good cliffhanger!

Really does make you think what would you do in a similar situation. I personally would have got me a gun(s) and a truck full of food!

If you missed this when it was on definitely worth a watch!

 This is must see TV

I was a fan of the original and looked to this remake with some intrepidation, however the remake/ reboot is every bit as edgy as the original.

Julie Graham did herself no favours with Bonekickers, but here she excels in the role of Abby Grant, exuding the requisite compasion, fear and strength previously brought to the role by Carolyn Semour.

Zoe Tapper star of cult favourite Hex (and soon to be seen in Demons alongside Philip Glenister of Life on Mars), forges a new charcater (not seen in the original) in the form of Anya. Zoe is a telented actress offering a dynamic of brains and sex appeal.

Meanwhile Paterson Joseph and Max Beesley who are clearly strong character actors should be commended for their restrain, allowing the ensemble cast (including the young Najid Hanif) to shine.

Adrian Hodges (Primeval) has done superb job of updating Terry Nations classic series and while not perfect it has much to recommend it.

JULIE GRAHAM IS AS WOODEN AS A PINE TABLE - HOWEVER...

I am going to be honest right from the off here, i never saw the original 1970's TV series of this show, but i hear it ran for three series and by the time it got to the mid-way mark of series two it was plodding along and became very boring. This reboot however, has been very entertaining right from the word 'go'. Sure only three episodes have been aired at the time of writing this review, but it is seriously good stuff! Each episode keeps up the pace with the one before and each time we see the survivors in a different situation each week involving other survivors and life or death situations. There is also the underlying story arc of the science lab where secret research is taking place - i take it they were responcible for the virus in the first place?? The only thing that i will say is, what i would call a downside to this series is that the first episode is extended by half an hour (from 1 hour to an hour and a half), yet while some may agree that this is a good thing, i personally found it very boring as it introduced us to chracters that died and took the story no futher. The other 'bad' thing about the series is that it stars Julie Graham in one of the main roles. She is so wooden its unbelieveable and her character and the backstory is so boring that it beggers belief. Yet that said, Survivors is a fantastic series and makes up for the lack of decent TV that has been on during 2008. Its just a shame that it runs to only 6 episodes and at the point of writing - one series. Heres hoping that the BBC will scrap some of their rubbish and sign these guys up for a second series that is longer and better than the original.
P.S. This is yards above Bonekickers, which also stars Julie Graham and has now been axed by the BEEB thank good!!
