The brainchild of leading anime creator Masamune Shirow (Ghost in the Shell), 'Appleseed' is a post-apocalyptic science fiction epic brimming with fast-paced action and awe-inspiring visuals!

It's 2131 AD and the future of the human race hangs in the balance. Female soldier Deunan Knute has survived a major war that has pushed the earth to the brink of destruction. Located in a bombed-out urban wasteland, Deunan is transported to the Utopian city of Olympus and reunited with her former lover Briareos whose body is now half man, half cyborg. In Olympus City, half the population is made up of Bioroids, a genetically engineered species with a limited life span who are designed without unstable human emotions in order to create a peaceful society and protect the remaining members of the human race.

In utopia, however, all is not as it seems. A group of rebel humans, who perceive bioroids as a threat to the integrity and future of mankind, try to sabotage the Olympus city computer and destroy the ability to re-activate the bioroid reproductive functions. As Deunan battles to stop the terrorists and find the 'Appleseed' data needed to extend bioroid life, the question of who she can trust and who is actually right- their society, or the terrorists- continues to arise...

'Appleseed' is a cutting edge production that uses state of the art technology and 3DCG to produce one of the most visually arresting and hyper-realistic animations to date. Directed by Shinji Aramaki, 'Appleseed' uses full CGI to allow for dynamic camera movements that enhance the action sequences. Characters are also in full CG, however, using a process called 'toonshading' characters retain an unmistakable 'cell anime look'.

Attention Buyers! Great Movie with 2 big flaws: DTS + Video

Im not really here to judge the qualities of this picture, which are many and quite groundbreaking i must say; instead i wish to complain about two big no-nos i've found in this "(5.1/dts)" version: First and in my opinion unexcusable is the fact that the dts soundtrack is only available in japanese, i myself dont mind watching original content with subtitles, but in this case the advertising on play.com should be corrected (im sending a message to tem as well); second (and this is for the distributor) i dont understand why we need to buy a dvd that comes from interlaced material and the american 30fps version on top of that (with all the 3-2 pulldown stuff done to it), when the original movie is obviously in 24fps progressive picture frames; i couldn't believe it at first, but the xvid version ripped from the japanese dvd looks a lot better: No interlacing in sight and every frame looks as it should.
Sorry for the pretty nerdy rant, but it is a pity to see the chance for a good transfer, of an otherwise great picture, ruined by a couple of trivial oversights.

Long story short: This dvd only has japanese dts and the video transfer is interlaced.

Let's all go wait for the hd version. Cheers.

One of the best films I have ever seen

Top 100 DVD Reviewer

Currently this is my favourite film. Superb animation, excellent soundtrack, clever and engaging story. I was on the edge of my seat at the climax of this film.
It matters not whether you like animated films or not, this film is superb. The voice acting is first class and the DTS really makes this film complete.

Few people will ever forget the opening sequence of this film due to the visual and aural feast that you are privy too. It doesn't let up throughout the whole film, every little detail has had hours of painstaking attention lavished on it, you will be truly impressed by this film on every level. You cannot help but enjoy every minute!

 Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!

OMG WOW WOW WOW!!! What more can I say but WOW!!! This movie totally rocks! It's ever so awesome! And all the music by Basement Jaxx and Paul Oakenfold featured throughout is just way cool! And the animation, CGI mixed with anime is just totally out of this world and action packed from the word go! Absolutely fantastic! You must must MUST watch this movie! It'll blow you away instantly! I loved every minute of it! :D

Action packed, but not quite there

Some guy recommended this movie, so I went ahead and bought it. After having watched it, I was left somewhat disappointed. Actually, I could tell from the first five minutes of the movie that it wouldn't be what I had hoped for. It just didn't manage to suck me in, and I believe the CG had much to do with it. The CG is very good, by all means, but the realistic looking surroundings and the cell shaded characters gives it more of a Roger Rabbit feel than an anime feel. I believe this might be an example of Masahiro Mori's Uncanny Valley kicking in, but in the sence of entertainment rather than interaction. I'm trying to rate this movie without getting too distracted by its animation technology, which is why I'm rating it 3 stars instead of 2. I'm not surprised that this is based on a good sized novel, because lengthy periods of the movie are used to explain a lot of the background story, which becomes quite tedious after a while. It would be better off by leaving some of it untold, giving it some depth instead. I also found the score totally off-beat and left with the impression that they had just thrown some music and themes on it as a last minute effort. Some of the sound themes had a strong resemblance to those found in The Matrix, and we sure don't need any more Matrix spinnoffs. Besides this, the plot is fairly predictable, and with some amount of clichés. All in all, it failed to hold my attention and didn't spur much excitement. Just because it says "From the creator of The Ghost In The Shell" on the cover, doesn't mean it's anywhere near GiTS. So, given the chance once more, would I have bought it? Nah, I don't think so. Just didn't work for me. But it's good to see that others liked it.

 Absolutely brilliant

This is one of my favourite anime of all time. I love the art direction on this one. The backgrounds are all done in 3D and the characters are cell shaded. It just looks so fresh and no other movie has even come close this one on a visual level not even EX Machina. In Ex Machine the 3D looks better but the characters are no longer simple cell shading, and in a way lost it's "freshness". Besides that the story is a rollercoaster, from one action scene to another and a deep interesting story carrying through it. U will will absolutely love Deunon, she is cool, sexy and even to today's female characters in anime she still stands strong. Anyway buy this movie and then buy Vexille too which is really good aswell.
