Batman Begins (2 Disc Edition)

For me, Batman will always be one of the greatest comic book heroes of all time. Though I adore the work of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and the sheer wealth of creativity abundant in the Marvel universe Bob Kane's creation instantly captured my imagination the second I lay eyes on his amazing adventures in the pages of childhood comic books and the television series of the 1960's. Not so much a superhero in the vein of Spiderman, Superman or the X Men as a vigilante Batman lacked the special powers of the rest of the pack and relied instead on his physical and mental agility. Here was a hero that was based in a feasible reality, a simple human being forced into doing inhuman things. After the catastrophic disaster that was 'Batman and Robin', however, I truly believed that Batman was defeated - not by one of his many nefarious foes but by Hollywood itself. It seemed that the Dark Knight would never get a film truly worthy of his magnificence. Enter Chris Nolan who, in 2005, finally gave us a film to banish all memories of Scumacher's destruction of a once superb franchise. Taking a far more realistic approach to the material this time around 'Batman Begins' is not only one of the best comic book adaptations of all time but very likely one of the best films of the last five years. With a superb ensemble cast (Bale is perfect as Bruce Wayne/Batman, with superb support from Michael Caine as Alfred and a chilling performance by Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow), a fantastic script by David Goyer, top-notch direction and an ending that will leave fans salivating for the forthcoming 'Dark Knight' sequel 'Batman Begins' is an undisputed masterpiece. What is so impressive about the film is that it will actually have you believing that a man would go to such extraordinary lengths to fight crime. Telling Bruce Wayne's story right from the beginning allows Nolan to craft a psychological journey through the mind of a genius. When his mother and father are brutally murdered at the hands of a simple thug (and not The Joker like the Burton installements) we see them fall victim to no more than a simple act of violence. And though his parents are not in the film a great deal we can clearly see the love and adulation Bruce had for them (especially his father whom he idolises and looks up to a great deal) This is definitely a film about Batman and though I enjoyed Burton's vision a great deal the decision to switch the focus away from the villains of the piece (even though the Scarecrow is the stuff of nightmares) allows for a wonderfully rich and emotional origin story. CGI is also kept to a minimum with such creations as the awe-inspiring new Batmobile built for real to add extra autheticity to the film. Hans Zimmers score, meanwhile, while not as iconic and bombastic as Elfman's theme is certainly still worth mentioning - a subtler, more restrained score that is sure to grow on you with mutiple viewings. If you thought comic books were kids stuff watch this and prepare to be astounded. The Bat is most definitely back...

Not only the best Batman film ever. But the best superhero film ever

This film is fantastic! After listening to the hype and excitment of The Dark Knight I thought i would get myself into Batman. And i wasn't disappointed by this film! Christian Bale is brilliant, and after watching the orginals, he is easily the best batman and this film is better than them by far. This isn't really a superhero film, its a film with proper storyline and there happens to be a guy who owns a bat costume! The Dark Knight is 10 times better than this and is a truely great film! Everyone should start to follow Batman from now because were in for a very enjoyable movie francise! (as long as they keep Christian and the fantastic story lines!)

Thank god for Chris Nolan to give this series the much needed adult tone and dark brooding menace this character deserves.Forget the other four movies ever happened, this is Batman year one.Christopher Bale is without a doubt the best Batman ever, and until 2008 sequel The Dark Knight this was the ultimate comic book adaption. The plot in the film is very good, and the script is clever enough to give a great back story. Everything in the film a brilliant. But if you want the camp day-glo whizz bangs of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, then this will disappoint, but also shame on you.
