Okay so the original was better, but this is really good, wonderfully quirky and colourful and an interesting take from Tim Burton, Johnny's perfromance isn't one of his best but he certainly steals the show, weird but wonderful songs, magical entertainment, all this makes it one yummy movie.
chocolate um um yum

I heard bad reports from people about this film saying the original 1970's film is better and the story is weak, and i hastened to watch it because of this until my girlfriend forced me to watched it last year and i have to admit i really liked it. Johnny Depp plays the part really well and adds a certain Sarcasm and wit to the character of willy wonker he portrays a gene wilder simularity very well. One flaw was probably the oompa lompas not being orange with green hair like the originals were but apart from that it was good viewing and is worth £5 of anyone's money.
Fantastic Film For All Of The Family

I had not heard very good reviews about this film - I sat and watched it with my children and we all loved it - I did not like the original 1970 film and was very curious about the re-make - vast improvement all round and Johnny Depp played the role of Willy Wonka extremely well and also looked the part!! Liked the ending aswell as it rounded off the film very well. I have since watched this film several times and we still enjoy it everytime we watch it - one word can only describe it FANTASTIC
Good

I've only seen this film in full for the first time in the last week. Previously I'd dismissed it as just another remake of the old story but IT IS NOT. Firstly I have to mention several things in the film have to be overcome to obtain total enjoyment. Firstly there is the grindingly irritating reference to "candy bars" throughout. This is because Americans are unable understand the term "chocolate bar". And considering the entire film is based around chocolate bars this is a rather glaring goof. The other irritatnts are around the same theme, such as the fact we have an Englisher than English boy saying "vacation" instead of "holiday", again just so americans don't get all confused with the English language. Other than this it's one hell of a classy ride. The main difference between the Gene Wilder film and this one is the fact Willy Wonka is a sinister character who doesn't much like children, and definitely doesn't even like parents - which due to his own bad childhood can't even bring himself to say out loud. Johnny Depp's Wonka I found spell binding. His (character's) awkwardness and almost deathly complexion definitely up the cool factor. The songs are funky as hell and make the old "umpa..lumpa..oompetity..do" of the other film look flat and lifeless by comparison, although of course, Danny Elfman does have the benefit of a couple of generations of musical hindsight. One thing that really struck me as well was the boy who played Charlie. I expected to have to tolerate the boy as I'm really not a fan of precocious littleuns in films, but this boy is actually likeable - which of course was always going to be essential for the film to work. The alternative ending Burton went for looks a little tacked on and stumbles a bit. Also, good while the effects are, it is clear that even in 2005 it simply isn't possible to be convinced that people can fly around in glass elevators. But all in all these complaints are but nothing in comparison to the sheer class of this production. If there's one thing I've learnt from the film it's that it's not only okay NOT to think children are the cutestey lickle things in the whole wide world, but it's okay to be eccentric along with it. Now that has to be a positive message in itself. Strongly recommend.
Does justice to the book!

When compared to the original version of the film, it is this Tim Burton version which does justice to the Roald Dahl book. Although I love the original, there were many adjustments made so as to make the film more family friendly. This newer version included a lot of material from the book, which had previously been left out. It is another amazing Tim Burton film, with another extraordinary performance from Johnny Depp!
Brilliant!

For a start, this is NOT a remake of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
This is a film version of Roald Dahl's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
(Willie Wonka and the chocolate factory Producers didn't like and wouldn't use Roald Dahl's screenplay, so he didn't let them have the name.)
Charlie and the Chocolate factory is a great film and true to the book.
It even makes you feel how the book did.
We get to see where the Ummpa Lummpa's come from, and we find out about Willie's past and his Father (played by Christopher Lee).
The songs are also much better, although you may find the Ummpa Lummpa's slightly annoying.
However, Charlie is not annoying in Burton's version.
If you are a fan of Roald Dahl's book, watch this film and not the 70's version.
It's funny and you won't be let down.
