A strange object, the "Cronos device," has been found inside the statue of an angel in an antique store. While the dealer, Jesus Gris, is holding the device, it springs open and its metallic legs pierces his flesh. Once "bitten," he develops a craving for human blood, and his body grows more and more youthful with each drink. As the addiction spreads through his body, he realizes he desires the blood of his innocent granddaughter...

 A new take on vampirism

I'm not sure what the previous duo of reviewers didn't get about this film, but it seems to me that this low-budget early effort from the voluble and inventive del Toro is worth every penny of the (current) low price. It's atmospheric and, while hardly explicit, doesn't stint on the nastiness as the main character deteriorates both mentally and physically.
Treat yourself to a non-Hollywood, non-Asian take on horror. You won't regret it.

Excellent debut from the man who will bring us The Hobbit...

In truth four stars might be more appropriate rather than the five I bestowed, but given the bizarrely and unfairly low current rating, I thought this needed a bump! Del Toro's first feature is a typically stylish and atmospheric horror flick and well worth checking out if you enjoyed any of his later movies, especially at this low price (good extras as well - Del Toro's commentaries are always fun). Oh, and considering the budget, the old-school practical effects are terrific, too!

ok im rating this low becauseit was given such a great hype and reviews by critics who obviously wernt watch the same film is i did its not a bad film at all but it is slow and seems to take forever to get going and it is not in the slightest scary so if you are buying this for scares dont if you are buying it for a decent drama on the cheap and you like subtitled films then ghive this one ago but rent it first buy devils backbone far superiour film

Ive heard about this film for years, and after really enjoying pans labyrinth and devils backbone,i really looked forward to watching this.after a promising start,it becomes apparent that it isnt going to get
any better.the story plods on,and at the end, leaves the viewer feeling empty and wondering how the time is going to be gotten back.its certainly no horror, just a very limp vampire-esk movie.

 Brutally Disappointing

That's the only way I can sum up how I felt about this film. I had such High Hopes for this one after reading various reviews but I really wish I hadn't wasted my money. If you're expecting a classic vampire film with action and gore, then buy Blade. If you're looking for a solution to your sleepless nights then buy this.
