They're already here...
A contemporary retelling of H.G. Wells's seminal classic, Steven Spielberg's sci-fi thriller reveals the extraordinary battle for the future of humankind through the eyes of one American family fighting to survive it.
Ray Ferrier (Cruise) is a divorced dockworker and somewhat less-than-perfect father. Soon after his ex-wife (Miranda Otto) and her new husband drop off his teenage son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and young daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) for a rare weekend visit, a strange and powerful lightning storm touches down. Moments later, Ray witnesses an extraordinary event that will change all their lives forever. A towering three-legged war machine emerges from deep beneath the earth; an ordinary day has suddenly become the most extraordinary event of their lifetimes - the first strike in a cataclysmic alien attack on Earth.
Ray scrambles to get his children away from this merciless new enemy, embarking on a journey that will take them across the ravaged countryside, where they become caught in the desperate tide of refugees fleeing from an extraterrestrial army of Tripods. But no matter where they run, there is no safety, no refuge: only Ray's unconquerable will to protect the ones he loves...

Modern re-telling of the classic tale, which more or less keeps the exact same plot, just condensing a few of the characters to speed things along. The opening alien attack is the most stunning section, the dark gloomy road movie that follows keeps the attention, but the ending struggles to work as there is no attempt to add to the original Victorian "they all got a cold" conclusion. However, it's no worse than the finale of the previous few Spielberg efforts - let's pray Indy 4 doesn't suffer the same fate.

Steven Spielberg, I've never understood that man, I honestly believe that he has only made two decent films in his entire career.
'The War Of The Worlds' re-make is just another high-budget, CGI dominated 'rollercoaster' load of rubbish starring the world's worst actor, Tom Cruise.
If your looking for quality entertainment, then turn away from this.
