Unleashed / Danny The Dog or what ever else it is known as is a superb Martial arts drama. That although the Drama some times rests as a uneasy balance between the bone crunching fights makes the movie more human. Jet Li is just amazing as the slave to underworld king pin Bob Hoskins. Hoskins is sleazy and also very funny, but Li gives one of the most tender performances ever seen in a film like this, and the added bonus of Morgan Freeman ( doing his best Ray Charles impression) as Li's kind helper. Set in Glasgow where nobody in the movie seems to have a Scottish accent? the movie has a welcome gritty edge. Although the pace of the film slackens after the fury of fist's in the first thirty minutes, it soon picks up again as Li's Cage Fighting underworld past comes crashing back in some amazing fights, the best being in a bathroom whilst a panicked onlooker in the shower tries to cover her modesty. This is great comic book action, and if you liked Blood and Bone, Kiss Of The Dragon and the Transporter series, you will relish every minute.
It's not subtle but it's a hell of a good movie!
This is without doubt one of Jet-li's best ever movies. An unusual but brilliant story full to the top with extraodinary fighting scenes and brutal bone crunching violence. there are so many cool bloody scenes in this movie and Jet-li shows off some real skill and inflicts some serious pain. Well worth the price a must buy if you love a fantastic action movie. Good supporting cast too.
Not really a fan of Martial Arts action films, but this was highly recommended by a friend.
Enjoyed the movie, didnt think it was Amazing, like Hero or House of Flying Daggers.
But did like the story, as it wasnt run of the mill. It was quite different and engaging.
The action sequences were Gritty, Brutal and Well Executed
The cast is very eclectic, Jet Li gives a fantastic performance in the Acting Stakes and is obviously brilliant in the Action Sequences. Bob Hoskins is terrifying and Morgan Freeman pitches in with a standard wise man performance.
The location of Glasgow, makes a big impact as it is not normally the setting for this type of movie and cat. So well done there.
Anyway pretty good movie, catch it when you can
Jet Li's best acting by far. set in an 'apparent' Glasgow, young danny has been raised as a kid to fight, stupidly some other reviewers have criticized the lack of panoramic overshots but this is blatantly the directors way of enclosing the viewers vision giving them a deeper insight into the restricted, enslaved world of danny. when he finds freedom and experiences happiness for the first time you will be guaranteed to be moved and danny's pain is surprisingly well felt from jet-li's rare acting skills.
a must own and deffinatly see!!
At first I heard of this film I was expecting just mindless violence and language. However I was presently surprised. I haven't seen Jet Li before in film except Hero, I thought he was just in the film because of his excellent fighting skills, however I was proved wrong, he portrays very well the neglected, bullied and basically "used" Danny, a gangsters tool (Bob Hoskins) yes, he can be a nasty person in film, to basically beat up and kill people with "outstanding" debts. And is attached to a collar which controls him, and when released all hell is unleashed. I was happy and surprised when Morgan Freeman turned up, who accepts Danny into his family along with daughter Kerry Condon, who add a strong sense of emotion and feeling to the film, as Danny, who becomes happy in his new family, must struggle between his new life, and the demons of his past. Unable to put his new life and family in danger, Danny must confront his old life, and the truth about his mothers death. Overall everyone acts well in this film and it is a great watch it manages to be an emotional thought provoking ride. The chemistry between the family, especially Jet Li and Kerry Condon is amazingly believable and surprising. Kerry Condon rising star? I certainly hope so! Danny the Dog/Unleashed triumphs where many others have tried and failed miserably. A must see for anyone in my opinion.
