First, a disclaimer: If you are easily offended, pious, or shocked by swearing for comedic effect, this DVD is most definitely not for you!
For the rest of us:
This is a pretty amazing piece and just gets better and better with repeated viewing, it's quotable, funny, thought provoking, has some amazing songs, your jaw will hit the floor a lot if you've never seen it before as it is quite foul mouthed and courts some pretty damn blasphemous religious concepts, it's totally irreverent, and when it's good it's very very good, and some of the performances are just stunning!
However, for an opera about a classic American show it is strangely painfully English at times, using terms and words no American would ever use and some of the performers speak FAR too cut-glass to truly represent their characters, but in some ways this lends to the overall quirkiness of this bizarre and fascinating creation.
The extras are extensive and well worth a look, and will really fill out your knowledge of this production.
This is one of my fave DVDs of all time and I thoroughly recommend you buy a copy, as it's got 'modern classic' written all over it, and I'd give it 5 stars but for it's still got a slight 'needs further tweaking' quality about parts of it and at 2 hours it drags a little in places, but I still have a very special place in my heart for this DVD!
It's SO totally off the wall and we may never see it's like again!
