From David Simon, creator and co-writer of HBO's triple Emmy-winning mini-series 'The Corner', this unvarnished, highly realistic HBO series follows a single sprawling drug and murder investigation in Baltimore. Told from the point of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe of subterfuge and surveillance, where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn.

Episodes comprise:

1. The Target
2. The Detail
3. The Buys
4. Old Cases
5. The Pager
6. The Wire
7. One Arrest
8. Lessons
9. Game Day
10. The Cost
11. The Hunt
12. Cleaning Up
13. Sentencing
  • Suitable for 18 years and over. Not for sale to persons under age 18. By purchasing this product, you declare that you are 18 years of age and over.

 Highly Addictive TV Series

I bought this without having seen it on TV before, and loved it. Really good show, great story and characters. The way you see both sides of the story is nice too. Highly addictive series, I immediately ordered the second season after I'd watched the first.

 Best show on TV?

I'm not one for cop shows really. I much prefer things like Supernatural, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, Angel etc. but having just finished the BBC2 run of season 1, I have to say The Wire is truly excellent.

A multi-layered show that covers every conceivable angle of the drug trade and the police efforts to stop it, from junkies, dealers and snitches to cops, judges and district officials, The Wire highlights the institutional bureaucracy and entrenched corruption of the Baltimore Powers-That-Be, and the hampered police efforts in trying to make cases against local drug dealers and their organised outfits. With no budgets for equipment or manpower, the Detail have to build their case from the ground up with a variety of department misfits, while simultaneously waging a constant battle with their over-zealous and petty superiors from having the rug pulled out from under them.

It also features the efforts of the dealers to stay one step ahead of the police, and the traumas and dangers they face as a result of the illegal trade they push. There's plenty of focus on the ethics of what they do, the humanity of those desperate to get out, and the unscrupulous nature they all have to have if they're to survive. Weakness is exploited and loyalty rewarded, but a bullet or handcuffs are only one wrong choice away.

There are so many good things about The Wire it would do the show a disservice to try and cover it all, and I don't thing you could unless you had a few thousand words to play with. Needless to say the way it so effortlessly shifts between every level of the Baltimore City Infrastructure, and manages to make even the most boring and innocuous of events seem interesting and important, says much about the writers, producers and directors, not to mention the actors playing the roles.

Can't wait to start season 2.

The best thing I've ever seen on TV. For real.

The only 'bad' thing about "The Wire" is that, after you have watched it, you feel no other series has been or will ever be as good as this one. Chapeaux-bas.

 Believe the hype!

£9.99 for the first series! You owe it to yourself to order this NOW! Far and away the best series ever; the approach is more like a novel than a tv series, requiring watching in chunks.

Superb script, brilliant acting, and the whole of life encompassed in 13 hours.

The other 4 series aren't bad either!

 Best show ever? Most def!!

The Wire has consistently been mentioned as perhaps the best TV show ever made, right up there with the Sopranos. I have eventually got round to watching season 1, and I have to say it didn't disappoint in any way.

This show is excellent in every aspect from screenwriting to acting, with some heartbreaking performances from the quite often very young actors. The story is complex and grim, but never anything less than totally gripping. After the first couple of episodes I was hooked, even to the extent of watching 5 episodes in a row one night - I just had to know what happened next. The best show TV show ever? Such a claim may appear foolish at first, but for once I have to agree. Simply unmissable, watch it and you will be addicted.
