Hayao Miyazaki had been cradling the idea for this wonderful fantasy for a long time before he finally decided to write and direct it. Set in rural Japan during the 1950s, My Neighbour Totoro is full of the magical touches that Miyazaki has become famous for.

Tatsuo Kusakabe and his two daughters, Mei and Satsuki, have moved to the country to be near their ailing mother who resides at a local hospital. As the girls explore their surroundings, the younger sibling, Mei, believes that the forest is inhabited by magical creatures, much to the amusement of her father and sister. However, one day Mei gets lost in the forest and discovers a group of Totoros - protectors of the forest. Eventually Mei convinces Satsuki to come with her and the three have a series of wonderful adventures together, as their mother begins to recuperate.

Hayao Miyazaki's imagination is simply incredible and My Neighbour Totoro perfectly displays his talent to create stories and characters that you really care about. Aside from the variously sized Totoros there is the magnificently surreal 'Catbus' to contend with too! Also, you get a first look at the 'dust bunnies' - later seen in Spirited Away!

A top notch film from Studio Ghibli! Totoro stars in this amazing anime, which has quality graphics considering it is almost 20 years old! Satsuki and Mei are trying to fit into their new home when the fantasy of soot sprites and friendly trolls comes to them! The catbus is a great addition and the film makes you want to watch it until the bitter end! A great laid back film for all the family.

An absolutely wonderful observation of life, that conveys feelings and emotions you simply would not believe possible for an animated film. Deceptively simple in style, this is a magnificent film. It is without a doubt one of the best animated films, no, one of the best films ever made.

My Neigbour Totoro is a really sweet, funny, charming film
The animation is excellent, and the charcters are so cute; any seen with the younger sister is adorable.
But, as other reveiwers have said, it does lack action (a lot), but it makes up for that by having a short running time.
This is a really good film, and it shows how good Studio Ghibli can be, compared by the actually not that good Spirited Away
If you like this, then you will probably like My neigbours the yamadas, howls moving castle, and the cat returns
