As 27-year old Taeko embarks on a holiday to the country she reminiscences about her childhood and journeys back to a time when she was only 15. Taeko recalls the major events that shaped her life into what it is now. In the present, Taoko longs for a change in her humdrum life as an office-worker in Tokyo. When she arrives at her relatives' farm she finds herself attracted to an earnest young farmer. As Taeko flips between the past and the present, she realises that she must make important decisions to ensure her future happiness.

Beautifully evoking both the 1960s and 1980s, Only Yesterday is a double period piece and the quintessential drama of Japanese school-day nostalgia. An animated classic from Studio Ghibli available for the first time ever!

 My Fav

This is my joint fav film out of the Ghibli collection. The storys deep and to be honest it hold relevance to where I am at my point in my life. The animations lovely and alot of effort and extra attentions gone into the features like muscle shapes etc. Might not make sense but once u watch the film u will know what I mean. Well worth buyin, its English Subtitles tho so If u dont fancy readin it might not be for you. But if you dont give it a chance, u dont know what a great film ur watching.

Only... the worst out of the bunch!

Only Yesterday is apart of the Studio Ghibli films. The collection usually offers something unique or magical. When you've watched 'Grave of the Fireflies' you think the same director would put as much sole into Only Yesterday as with Grave of the Fireflies. No he did not! Only Yesterday offers a bland palette of browns, greys and occasional dashes of colour. Even though the film is meant to offer you a feeling of nostalgia it actually is very boring to watch. I watch films as a form of escapism, and don't particulary want to be reminded of every day life. Only Yesterday is nothing like the others in the collection, it is a souless, boring shell that detracts rather than inspires. The only enjoyable aspect of the film was the two different storylines. However, these arn't incredibly paced well and begin to bore half way through the film.
Only Yesterday is a coming of age film that requires you to watch something without colour. Buy the film If you want to complete the collection like me, watch it once and let it gather dust as thats as great as it gets.

My favourite Ghibli film, The flashbacks are so entertaining, a totaly charming and loving film. Taeko, Child and Adult is such a great character creation.

Maybe the best animated film ever! (In my opinion)

This film is absolutely stunning! It tells the story of 27 year old Taeko an office worker from Tokyo who is visiting the country on her holidays. On the way Taeko reflects on her childhood. The film is excellent and is really for adults probably more than it is for children! The animators animated the characters with much more realistic movements especially in the face, this conveys much emotion to the viewer and you really begin to love these characters that you actually can forget that it is animated! The whole film is vibrant in colour and the backgrounds are rich and beautiful but probably the colours are maybe not as vibrant as other animated films but the colours fit with the realistic nature of the film. After following these Characters as I said you begin to really feel close to them and the ending does justice to this. The voice talent is perfect and the animation has been fitted around the voices not vice versa which is unusual in anime this is why they have such realistic facial movements. This film is only in Japanese with English subtitles. I personally prefer it this way as it is the way it is supposed to be and I'm glad it is otherwise I'd be missing out on this brilliant voice talent! My words cannot do justice to this film. I read that it was originally made for a female audience but I'm a man and I also love it. If you like a good story which is clever and beautiful then you should try this film.
