5 The Punisher Delivers Justice!Woogus | 03/08/2009 | See all Woogus's reviews (1)Okay. First of all, this movie is NOT a sequel to the 2004 Punisher movie starring Tom Jane. This is not ' The Punisher 2 '. What you have here is a whole new take on the story that stays very close to the Punisher world seen in titles from the ' Marvel Knights/Marvel Max ' series of books. To be honest, i didn't have high hopes when i first heard about this film. So much so that i never watched the cinema release. What a mistake i made. Within the first few minutes of the movie you are treated to a violent and gory action fest that fans of Garth Ennis' run on the comics would be proud of. On one hand, you could say the scene in question shocked me because i went into watching the film half-heartedly. On the other hand, if that is the case, then why after getting fully on board with the film, did i still find scenes later in the film just as shocking?Fans of the books will be pleased to know that that there are lots of familiar sights and characters. The background for the movie is New York , Two major characters from the books are featured - namely the Punisher's arms specialist, Microchip ( Wayne Knight ) and mob psychopath and all-round bad guy Jigsaw ( Dominic West ). Even the Punisher's origin is intact, and shown as a series of flashbacks. The acting in the film is good all round. Irish born Ray Stevenson plays an older, more battle scarred Punisher A.K.A. Frank Castle in this outing. He performs the action scenes well, and does a good job of the dialogue. We even get to see that under the war machine Castle has become, he still has a caring side. West does the Jigsaw character proud, sporting an American-Italian accent and the horribly disfigured face he is known by. My only gripe is with Microchip. Not because of Knight's acting skills - he does a fine job. I just feel the character wasn't used well enough.Overall i recommend this movie. I paid £6.99 for it, but would have happily paid the full RRP for it. Whether you like the Tom Jane/John Travolta 2004 effort or not, it doesn't matter. Whether you like the books or not, it doesn't matter. If you want a violent, action packed film with guns and a bit of vengeance thrown in, then this is for you.
