Appaloosa

I have to admit I didn't appreciate this film the first time I watched it. I liked quite a lot about it but found the female part (played by Rene Zellweger) annoying and an unnecessary part (not realising at the time this was based on a book). I wanted a good old bloke's western with gunfights and no women allowed.

Second time around I really appreciated the real reason for this movie. The relationship between the two main characters, Virgil and Everett (played brilliantly by Ed Harris, who also directed, and Viggo Mortensen). Ed Harris is excellent in this role and the whole setting is very believable.

A realistic and thought provoking modern Western that may need to be watched twice to really appreciate how good it actually is.

what other westerns sometimes lack is a look into the law system that was used back then. this gives an extra input here because it is directly related to the bad guy at hand.
cinematographically, it's also a beautiful movie. the performances of viggo mortensen and ed harris are convincing, but the part of jeremy irons may be the strongest after all.
if you're into westerns you'll like this movie. if you're not, it still is a good drama and worth watching

If you like westerns then I'm sure you'll enjoy this one as I did. It's very well made with good photography and the acting is superb. I didn't find it slow at all as one reviewer has said and it kept me entertained until the end. Overall much better than expected as the film had mixed reviews from the critics.

An all out excellent western! Costumes excellent ! Firearms excellent, (correct guns for correct time !)
Going into a gunfight, shown as more of a duel, i.e guns drawn and cocked, rather than the fabled "fast draw". Excellent !
(If I had to point at anything, and say "Erm !!!" It was the Indian skirmish scene, maybe just a touch thin and convenient. So I'll give that bit half of an excell !!! )
It's the type of well made, blood,dirt and dust oater, that Clint Eastwood would not have been ashamed of.
More of the same please.

Very disappointing, poor script and very slow moving story. It started really well but just fizzled out to nothing, no finale or anything, and renee zellwegger was dreadful, normally a very good actress, it was like she had been dragged off the street and never acted before. I won't be watching this again.

Very good fun film . Not to much action but what ther was was good . And also some funny parts thrown in for good taste . Its worth another look or two

I bought this video for my husband for Christmas and had a long anxious wait for it to be released, but when we watched it we were a bit disappointed as we expected a bit more. i don't know what that bit more should have been but they was just something missing still it was a really good made film and maybe we need to watch it a few more times to appreciate it.

Cast an acting in this film are top notch. I did find the film a little slow in parts and I was hoping for a bit more action hence 4/5 but I think this goes down to personal preference and you wont be disappointed. Definitely worth watching.

Actor Director Ed Harris has made a truly great western. This is the best western I have seen since Unforgiven. All the cast are brilliant, and the plot is good, but also the added light touch of humor makes this film a real pleasure to watch. Appaloosa should please antbody who loves Western's, and although I'm not such a big fan of the Western, I found this to be a brilliantly entertaining and gripping movie.
One of the most underrated and best films of the year!
