Father Jacob, Vatican Saint-maker, miracle detective and exorcist, is on a mission: to defeat Satan before the end of the world. The stakes really are that high, as the Devil tightens his grip - claiming the last century as his own, this one in his sights.

For the maverick Jacob, played by award winning star Martin Shaw (The Professionals, George Gently, Judge John Deed), the job's getting busier by the week. Claims of apparitions, possessions, signs of the Saints and the miracles of God are on the up. For some, this is proof the struggle with Satan is intensifying and Armageddon, the battle of the End of Days, approaching fast. For others, it's merely an indication the Catholic Church is increasingly vulnerable to the whims of the deranged and deceitful...

Investigating the truth, confronting the sceptics as well as pure evil, takes a priest of extraordinary integrity, intelligence, compassion and guts but - above all - faith. Father Jacob is such a priest: a man whose convictions enable and embolden him to confront the controversial, to present the truth in all its forms, wherever that leads him. And, with Jacob forced to face his own hidden demons, we follow him deep into that heart of darkness: witnessing, as he does, the most startling acts of satanic and saintly behaviour.

Written and directed by the electrifying Joe Ahearne (Perfect Parents, Dr Who), Apparitions confronts us with as many questions as answers, taking us on a challenging, often terrifying but ultimately life-affirming journey of white knuckle supernatural mystery and intrigue.

This series was aired with little fanfair but has proved to be a thoroughly compelling watch. Dark, disturbing horror with excellent performances from Martin Shaw and the cast. Fingers crossed there is a second series.

Highly recommended.

I loved this show. In fact the title for this review comes from the fact that I was grinding my teeth in suspense all the way through it. You never knew what to expect and it just kept surprising me.

If you watched films like the Excorcist and the Excorcism of Emily Rose and felt disappointed, this is SOOOOO much better then anything that's come before it. If I could give it ten stars I would.

I recommend it to anyone who loves a gritty show that'll shock them, keep them hanging and coming back for more. Also to anyone that loves the darker more violent show or just someone that wants to watch something about excorcism that is not totally useless.

Praise for Martin Shaw who came up with the idea in the first place. ANd praise to his acting as Father Jacob, the priest that never loses faith at any time, no matter the circumstances.

After years of being let down by so called tv "horror" series' along comes Apparitions to blow all its predecessors right out of the water.

This dark and groundbreaking series is a long overdue push in a new direction for the BBC. Martin Shaw takes the viewer into the darkest part of all of us in this horror series that will haunt you long after the final credits role to black.

 Outstanding perfomance from Martin Shaw

What a drama
Wasn't really advertised on screens that much and only heard about it from people complaining because of the subject matter so tuned in to see what it was about and was hooked from moment one.

This is a fantastic drama series, Martin shaw plays Fr Jacob brilliantly. His unwavering faith in light of events is really emotional.
Love the interaction and internal struggles he faces when dealing with the dark side,
I watch the final episode all the time and still see something new

I really hope there is a second series!

Great idea for a TV series, and a superb performance from Martin Shaw. If you like the Exorcist and similar films, this is a must-see.
