Memories Of Matsuko

What a fantastic movie this turned out to be and i can't believe that i'm the first to give it a rating, i can't give it a reveiw because i'm not that good at that sort of thing, just to say i enjoyed it immensely and was transfixed the whole of the 2hrs plus then i watched making off right after. I would reccomend this to anyone and everyone who loves movies, Japan and life. Enjoy.

As an introduction to modern japanese cinema this film is a must see. A black comedy cum musical. There are some sad parts and extremely funny parts, the music is modern and up todate, and the who thing is quirky in a japanese art house style - lots of bright colours which director Tetsuya Nakashima carries over from Kamikaze Girls. Brilliant film - it is, of course, about the tragic life of the title character (Matsuko) as discovered by her nephew.

Memories of Matsuko is an interesting tale of finding out about someone who you didn't even know existed.
Sho is a young man lacking drive or direction in his life, he spends his days laying about waiting for nothing. An unexpected visit from his father due to the death of his Aunt Matsuko, an aunt who he didn't know existed. Being a man with much free time on his hands he's given the job of cleaning her flat. While searching through her things he starts to learn more about the Unknown Aunt and her Cruel Fairytale of a life.
Memories Of Matsuko has all the whacky Japanese elements mixed with the good storytelling of classic cinema. It has cool and creative Art House style yet keeps the fundementals of hollywood.
It's well written, well directed and brilliantly acted out...

Overall:
Memories Of Matsuko is a tragic tale of happiness which will take you from the bottom of the ocean to the highest peak. Throughout the movie your emotions will be running from sad to happy and back again. This is one of the best movies i've seen in a long time, very original.
Truly a brilliant piece of cinema.
