Coining the new term 'action noir' in Korea, director Kim Ji-woon follows up his extraordinary features A Quiet Family and A Tale Of Two Sisters with this blackly comic thriller.

Lee Byeong-heon stars as Sun-woo, a unique character with a curious lifestyle; he's not only a valued gang member and the proprietor of a hotel bar but also the right-hand man to the powerful gang leader, Mr. Kang (Kim Yeong-chul). When Kang suspects that his beautiful young mistress Hee-soo (Shin Min-ah) might be messing around with another man, he enlists Sun-woo's help to resolve the matter, commanding him to follow her around to see what information he can dig up. Sun-woo's orders are explicit: if he catches Hee-soo cheating, he is to execute her. However, when Sun-woo spies Hee-soo with her boyfriend, he makes a fateful decision, one that will have major consequences for all involved...

A Bittersweet Life is a Korean film focusing on the morality of favoured mob hand, Sun-woo. It is intense and highly violent, offering some terrific and dynamic actions scenes. The heart of the plot is based on a spare of the moment decision made by Sun-woo, which in turn brings about dyer consequences. The story is well developed, leading to a conclusion that is left open for interpretation. What I found interesting about this film was how an act of mercy shown by Sun-woo caused such violence to break out. Perhaps even more mysterious is wondering why this particular assignment caused Sun-woo to question his ethics, especially when you consider how unattached he was to the couple involved. In short, the movie is well shot and well driven, definitely worth your time.

 A Hidden Gem

The shady world of criminals and gangsters is one which has had no shortage of representation on the silver screen, however not all gain the recognition they deserve. A Bittersweet Life is fully able to stand head and shoulders alongside the greats of the genre such as Scarface and White Heat, however is almost criminally underseen. Known as Dalkomhan insaeng in its native South Korea, it tells the story of Sun-woo- hotel owner but also enforcer for crime lord Mr. Kang. A request by Mr. Kang for Sun-woo to watch his young girlfriend Hee-soo turns his life into a living hell as he tries to cover up her infidelity. Without giving too much away, the film features astounding fight scenes worthy of Old Boy as Sun-woo turns from being hunter to the hunted. The real standout from this film is Byung-hun Lee as Sun-woo- as the film goes on he manages to portray the sheer hell this character is in- imagine this film in the hands of JCVD and you will understand what an amazing portrayal he has created!

 Simply amazing

Simply a brilliant film, this has converted a lot of people who "don't like" subtitled films. Further proof of how well written films like this transend language and cultures. Amazing

Quite simply a GREAT film! It's brilliantly directed by Kim Jee-Woon with excellent cinematography and editng. The leading actor Lee Byung Hun never puts a foot wrong as the coolest character you'll ever see on film. It's simply a nice moody Gangster/revenge film with an undercurrent of tragic romance that packs more emotion than your usual blood and guts revenge movie. This films deserves to have as big as audience as possible.
